Metro 2036: A New Metro Game Already In Development

Metro 2036 is the supposed title, but Artyom surely won't be the next protagonist.

Metro has had one of the longest runs in the gaming franchise. The first Metro game, Metro 2033, was released back in 2010. Since then, 4A Games has developed four more titles, the last one being Metro Exodus, which expanded Sam's narrative and joined Artyom's crew on the Aurora armored train.

After five years, Metro Exodus will celebrate its anniversary on February 14. 4A Games previously revealed the Metro franchise's roadmap, which includes remakes of older games and a confirmed new game. The developers said they'd reveal the game when ready. Then, in December 2024, an unclear screenshot caught Metro enthusiasts' attention.

As two soldiers looked like Reich soldiers were seen in the screenshot, some thought the screenshot was from the next Metro game in development, maintaining a loyal fan base similar to the steady rise in interest around apple pay bookmakers not on GamStop. Numerous details regarding the upcoming Metro game, in addition to the leaked screenshot, have begun to come to light.

First, Metro 2036 is the working title for the upcoming Metro game. Since Artyom will no longer be the main character, this new game will feature a new perspective on the post-apocalyptic world. While Metro: Redux featured a great story on Artyom, Metro Exodus was the end of Artyom's story, and Dmitry Glukhovsky, the author of Metro 2033, Metro 2034, and Metro 2035, himself said that Artyom is happy and living in the canon.

Even though we last heard that Dmitry had begun working on a new project after finishing the Metro series. However, word has it that since 4A Games has opted to keep making new Metro games, Dmitry will supposedly be involved in some capacity.

There have been rumors that the next Metro game will be a multiplayer shooter. However, Metro games have consistently been first-person shooters, whether set in the wide world or the Metro underground. The next installment will not be a multiplayer letdown since no sane developer would risk losing that fanbase. Despite the possibility of a multiplayer mode, the main story remains a first-person shooter.

Moscow, more especially the Moscow Metro, will host the game again. Remarkably, the developers promised to improve and add additional elements to many of the places from earlier games. Going back to Moscow is a great idea because there are still so many stories to tell there. Possibly a more open-world Moscow, complete with movement between stations and several side quests. There is undoubtedly still potential in such a setting, particularly given how the battle outside the Metro began and was immediately discontinued in Exodus.

Insiders claim the game will continue to feature expansive, detailed levels and that players will be able to explore stations that resemble those in Metro: Last Light. A new metropolitan area will be one of the main sites, though it's unclear whether it will be inside the Metro or on the outside. Because of engine limitations, the game won't have a vast open world, but Metro Exodus has shown how expansive and varied it could be. The developers have the opportunity to expand on that accomplishment by adding more sizable areas.

We'll also be able to employ new strategies and adapt to various playstyles thanks to a new armory of weaponry. This all surely sounds very interesting and uplifting for Metro fans. Some, however, may be disappointed that we are going back to the Moscow Metro and not carrying on Artyom's story. Metro Awakening left the fan craving, since the game didn't feature Artyom; the VR's plot stood on its own and had no ties to him. So it'll be interesting to see whether 4A Games introduces a new protagonist in Metro 2036, like how they did for Awakening.
