Sony Suggested Top PS4 GTA Online Players to Upgrade Before GTA 6 Launches
Dedicated GTA Online players get a warning from Sony that GTA 6 will only be available on PS5 as the long-awaited release gets closer.

The long-running cycle of delays and uncertainty around GTA 6 finally seems to be settling down. After years of rumors, shifting expectations, and people wondering whether the game would actually make its release window, it now looks like Rockstar is locking in a November launch for this year. That means GTA 6 is suddenly only a few months away, and with how fast this year has moved, the wait almost feels unreal at this point.
At the same time, it feels like Rockstar is one of the only studios that can keep delaying a game without permanently damaging the hype around it. Whether it's GTA or Red Dead Redemption, people always come back the second a release date starts looking real again. Once the game finally lands, most of the complaints usually disappear overnight because everyone already knows GTA 6 is going to be one of the biggest launches gaming has ever seen.

Now that the release is getting closer, Sony appears to be heavily involved with the game's marketing push.
The company reportedly has the marketing rights for GTA 6, and that creates an interesting situation because Sony spent most of this generation continuing to support the PS4. For years, players were still getting major cross-generation releases, so there was never a strong reason to immediately move over to the PS5.
That especially applies to GTA players. GTA 5 and GTA Online have remained some of the most played games on PS4 for years, and many players never felt pressured to leave that console behind. But GTA 6 changes everything because the game is only coming to PS5 at launch. Suddenly, millions of players who stayed on PS4 are being forced to think about upgrading.
According to the discussion, Sony has started sending emails and console notifications directly to heavy GTA Online players on PS4. Those messages reportedly tell players they are among the top GTA players on the platform and remind them that GTA 6 will not be available on their current console.
The notifications also include QR codes that lead directly to PS5 purchasing options. Sony is also pushing the fact that GTA 5 owners can upgrade to the PS5 version for free, meaning players can move over early and already have everything set up by the time GTA 6 launches.
As strange as it sounds, a lot of casual players may genuinely believe GTA 6 is still coming to PS4.
Games like GTA, Madden, and Call of Duty exist far outside the normal gaming bubble. Many people buying those games are not constantly checking gaming news or following social media discussions about hardware generations. From their perspective, the PS4 has continued getting new games for years, so it makes sense to assume Rockstar would keep supporting it too.
That assumption became even easier because most major franchises stayed cross-generational for so long. Sports games still launch on PS4 every year, and Call of Duty only recently started moving toward becoming fully next-generation-focused. Up until now, publishers have kept supporting older hardware because the player base was still massive.
There is also the reality that upgrading is expensive.
For a lot of players, sticking with PS4 was probably tied to cost just as much as convenience. The console still runs the games they play most, and until GTA 6, there was not much urgency to move on. But now the timing looks rough because PS5 prices are not exactly in a comfortable spot anymore.

The standard PS5 now sits in the $600 range in some areas, while the PS5 Pro pushes even higher. Once you start looking at the upgraded model, the price can get close to $900, depending on the setup. That makes the jump into the new generation a lot harder than it would have been a few years ago when discounts, sales, and cheaper refurbished units were easier to find.
The feeling now is that if you planned on getting a PS5 eventually, the best time to buy one may have already passed. Prices have stayed high, and there is little sign they are going to suddenly become cheaper before GTA 6 launches.
Even with all of that, the PS4 still gets a lot of respect.
It had one of the strongest runs of any console Sony has ever released, and many players are clearly still using it every day. But from a hardware perspective, the PS5 delivers a much better overall experience, even if some people still prefer the PS4 era when it comes to first-party exclusives.
With GTA 6 getting closer, though, the transition is finally becoming unavoidable. The game is expected to move consoles in massive numbers no matter what happens, and Sony is clearly preparing to take full advantage of that momentum. Between the marketing rights, direct notifications to GTA players, and the lack of a PC version at launch, GTA 6 is shaping up to be one of the biggest reasons yet for players to finally leave the PS4 behind.
