Sony Rumours Surface

Sony Computer Entertainment Japan (SCEJ) has all but confirmed that a new piece of gaming hardware is coming, after posting a job listing on their website for an "evaluator/assessor" for a "new game machine." What that is exactly is to be confirmed, but according to a translation from the guys at GameSpot, by a fluent Japanese speaker, the new machine is "part of the PlayStation or PSP series and their peripherals."

Perhaps it’s the PSP2 that everyone has been speculating about these past few weeks. Maybe it’s yet another upgrade to the PSP, but that seems strange given the PSP-3000 was released only last October. All that we know at this point is applicants will be "part of an advisory staff that will play PlayStation series software on this new machine and check its functionality.”

If this was another PSP version it would become the fourth iteration in the space of a few short years. The first upgrade was the PSP-2000, which was 33% lighter and 19% thinner. It also had twice the RAM of the old machine (64MB), video output and supported charging via USB. The second upgrade was the PSP-3000, which offered a brighter LCD screen, a built-in microphone and interlaced video output.

Apparently SCEJ are working on a press release in response as we speak, so news will be posted as and when we know.
