A little peek on our neighbors

Rant by Daktary on  Apr 24, 2010

As I was kinda bored these days because I didn't have anything to play I went to check some sites in hope of finding some games to pass my time with. Although that was the plan, I noticed that there's a certain wind of change blowing on the other gaming sites. So in case you’ve missed it, here's what's going on:

Using their partnership with Raptr, GameSpot added an ability to sync (to a certain degree) your GS and Raptr accounts and specifically your achievements on XBL, PSN, Steam and WoW. This in change adds pictures of all your achievements under your GS profile as "badges"(now renamed as achievements). Besides this they’ve also catalogued the site’s achievement by their “rarity”(or difficulty) with the color codes from WoW and a smell facelift to the user panel.

On the other hand GiantBomb(and also Animevice) added something that’s called the quest system. This is something like the old Scavenator games GS used to run, only that there isn’t any token you need to find; a simple page visit is enough to get the quest(or that part of it) completed. As a part of this quest system the sites also implemented the level system which works different than ours. It’s based on xp you earn for completing quests thus giving it a more interactive touch.

As a little sidenews, Raptr tries more and more to copy Xfire and added the in-game feature which is... CRAP. There’s surely something funky going on with it(and I’m not even talking about the fact that it works only for some MMOs...), a possible memory leak or something as when I tried it out it made my proc go haywire and my framerate dropped to 1-2 fps. Passing over the “small problem” I actually wanted to try it out to see if it actually works and started doubleclicking frantically on some names from my contact list... Surprise! Nothing happened. But the biggest surprise was after I’ve exited the game as all the chat windows for the test contacts were opened. o_O That means using a in-game messenger to open a chat window outside the game... Outstanding! So, yeah, if you were eagerly waiting to use Raptr as your in-game messenger you should really wait a little longer :P

So all this commotion made me more and more eager to see what funky features will we be getting. I can smell something good coming the way :D

Besides this here’s what I’ve been doing lately:

Finished the following games:

-Enclave : Pretty cool action RPG. It reminded me in a way of Forgotten Realms: Demon Stone. The game you choose between a couple of characters. A little hard at first but tends to get easy enough once you get the hang of it. Finished both the light and the dark campaign.

-Gladiator: Sword of Vengeance : Now this game took me a little by surprise with it’s stunning graphics (well at least for 2003). The controls are kinda awkward and some of the challenges are nerve-wrecking but it’s a fun and gory little 8 hour game :D

-Enigmata 2 : Yes, that’s the flash game Koshai mentioned some blogs back. And might I add that is by far the best flash game I’ve played so far(I usually avoid flash games but this one’s different). Beaten the game and got 53 out of 57 achievements.(I don’t know what the other 4 are but I’m not that interested in actually finding out :P ).

As usual, watched a couple more animes :D

Ow, and here’s a funny little vid I’ve found:
