This year, there's lots to expect from Activision's fan-favorite Call of Duty (CoD) franchise. The Call of Duty games were recently announced as part of the Esports World Cup, joining a list of 22 esports titles thanks to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (MW3) and Call of Duty: Warzone joining the large-scale tournament.

The Warzone tournament will feature a $1 million prize pool, while the Modern Warfare 3 tournament is set to have a $1.8 million pool. The worldwide competition, taking place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, includes almost every other notable esports title today, including Dota 2, League of Legends, PUBG, and Rocket League.

For fans of the CoD esports scene, the Esports World Cup will be a refreshing avenue to root for their favorite teams and players. The MW3 segment of the tournament has a total of 16 teams competing, whereas the Warzone competition will feature 21 teams fighting it out for first place.

Aside from the Esports World Cup, however, there are lots still in store for Call of Duty gamers and fans. Below, we'll take a look at some of the key events in the Call of Duty community this year and beyond, including the recent conclusion of the Call of Duty League (CDL) 2024:

Call of Duty League 2024

For long-time CoD fans and gamers, one established fact about the franchise is that we can expect a new game annually. Aside from the promise of a new annual release, each release also marks a new meta or shift in Call of Duty's esports scene, which takes place on the latest released CoD game. One of the most significant CoD esports events to date is the Call of Duty League (CDL), which is produced by publisher Activision.

Aside from being a form of entertainment for CoD enthusiasts and gamers, the CDL is also an avenue for people to bet on Call of Duty players and teams they like. Every year, the CDL season hosts various big tournaments leading up to the CDL Championship, providing lots of opportunities for fans and bettors to celebrate and root for their favorite teams.

Aside from watching or attending live tournaments, fans can also easily bet on their favorite CoD esports teams online and through live streams of the tournaments. Fans who took a chance on North American team OpTic Texas recently celebrated the organization's second CoD Champs title after the team's win over the New York Subliners. OpTic's win is a major comeuppance from the team's lackluster performance resulting in a last-place finish at Major Four.

Call of Duty 2024 release

With the Call of Duty League season over for the year, fans, players, and gamers have the off-season to look forward to, where teams and organizations may be planning roster moves to dethrone OpTic's Green Wall in the next 2025 season. Aside from behind-the-scenes esports shifts, however, there is also the topic of the year's Call of Duty game release.

Recent rumors, announcements, and leaks point to an official sequel to Black Ops Cold War, which was the franchise's 2020 release. Dubbed Black Ops 6 for now, the game was confirmed by official media channels and was announced with short marketing clips and images. One of the clips showed a video of a group of people approaching Mount Rushmore.

In the footage, the faces of the Presidents have been blindfolded, with a message that reads: The truth lies. Fans also expected Black Ops 6 to be included as part of the Xbox Game Pass subscription services, which Activision later confirmed to be true. As mentioned, the new Black Ops 6 game will be the new title esports teams and players will play for the upcoming 2025 CDL season.

Call of Duty 2025 Release

While the Black Ops 6 game to be released later this year took four years to develop since the release of Black  Ops Cold War, our post sharing a leak of Call of Duty 2025 plans indicates that Activision may already be planning for the franchise's 2025 entry. Rumor has it this would be a direct sequel to Call of Duty II and will pick up where the last game's campaign ended. Leaks also suggest that this next CoD will have players carrying over weapons and other unlocks from Modern Warfare II instead of new items.

Of course, it's important to take these rumors with a grain of salt. A few months ago, rumors floated on the Internet that the game is yet to have an assigned main developer, which has left some members of the CoD community concerned. Currently, there are rumors that Sledgehammer Games may be taking the reins for this 2025 installment, with other Activision studios contributing to the project.
