If you want to master the Drift Zones and mountain roads in Forza Horizon 6, building a dedicated drift car is the best place to start. A good drift build is not simply about adding as much horsepower as possible. You need the right drivetrain, tires, suspension, differential, and gearing to make the car predictable when the rear end steps out. 

This guide covers the essential upgrades and tuning settings you need to build a reliable drift car in Forza Horizon 6. 

Choose the Right Car for Drifting 

Start With a RWD Car 

For beginners, a rear-wheel-drive (RWD) car is the easiest platform to learn on. RWD lets you control the drift primarily through throttle and steering, making the car's behavior easier to understand.

Community drift builds commonly favor cars such as the Nissan Silvia S15, Toyota AE86, Mazda RX-7, and other lightweight RWD platforms. 

Look for a car with: 

  • RWD 
  • A relatively light chassis 
  • Good steering response 
  • A balanced wheelbase 
  • Enough engine power to break the rear tires loose 

You do not need an extremely powerful car to start drifting. A controllable build will generally be more useful than a car that constantly spins out. 

Install the Essential Drift Upgrades 

Prioritize Control Over Maximum Power 

Head to the Upgrade Shop and focus on parts that improve the car's ability to maintain a slide. 

The most important upgrades are: 

  • Drift suspension 
  • Drift differential 
  • Race transmission 
  • Race brakes 
  • Weight reduction 
  • Adjustable suspension components 
  • Wider tires where appropriate 
  • Engine upgrades for additional power 

A drift suspension and adjustable differential give you far more control over the car's behavior than simply adding horsepower. 

How Much Power Do You Need? 

There is no single horsepower number that works for every car. More power makes initiating a drift easier, but too much power can make throttle control difficult. 

As a starting point, build enough power to break traction consistently without making the car impossible to control. Community tuning guides commonly place dedicated drift builds in the mid-hundreds of horsepower rather than relying exclusively on extreme power. 

Pick the Right Tires and Tire Pressure 

Drift tires are the obvious starting point for a purpose-built drift car because they make it easier to break the rear tires loose and maintain a slide.

Tire pressure is also important. A useful starting point is around 28–30 PSI; then adjust it based on how easily the car initiates and holds a drift. Community setups vary considerably, so treat the number as a baseline rather than a universal setting. 

If the car refuses to initiate a drift, experiment with slightly higher pressure. If it feels too loose and difficult to control, reduce it and test again. 

Tune the Suspension for Controlled Oversteer 

Adjust Camber and Toe 

Your suspension needs to keep the front tires responsive while allowing the rear of the car to rotate. 

A good starting point is: 

  • Front camber: around -2° to -5° 
  • Rear camber: around -1° to -2° 
  • Front toe: slight toe-out 
  • Rear toe: close to neutral or slight toe-in 
  • Caster: around 6–7° 

These settings are only a baseline. Different cars can require very different values, so make small changes and test the car after each adjustment. Community RWD tuning guides similarly recommend slight front toe-out and high caster for better drift initiation and recovery. 

Tune the Anti-Roll Bars 

Anti-roll bars can dramatically change how quickly the car rotates. 

For a drift setup, you generally want enough rear rotation to keep the car from feeling reluctant to slide, without making the rear uncontrollable. Exact values vary heavily between cars and tuning philosophies, so adjust them gradually rather than copying one number across every build. 

Set Up the Differential and Gearing 

Use a High Acceleration Differential 

The differential is one of the most important parts of a drift build.

  • Acceleration: 100% 
  • Deceleration: 0%

A high acceleration-lock setting helps both rear wheels continue spinning together when you apply throttle, making it easier to hold a consistent drift. 

If the car feels too aggressive, reduce the setting slightly and test it again. 

Keep the Engine in the Powerband 

Your gearing should allow you to stay in a useful RPM range while drifting. 

Shorter gearing can make it easier to keep the engine in its powerband, while longer gears can provide more stability during high-speed sections. A 6-speed race transmission is a popular choice in community drift builds because it provides plenty of flexibility when selecting the ideal gear. 

For most beginner builds, start with second or third gear and adjust the final drive until the car can maintain wheelspin without constantly hitting the limiter. 

Turn Off the Assists and Learn the Drift 

Disable Traction and Stability Control 

Before testing your new build, turn off Traction Control and Stability Control. These systems are designed to reduce wheelspin and unwanted vehicle rotation, which works against what you are trying to achieve while drifting. 

Manual transmission can also give you more control over which gear the car uses, although an automatic is perfectly usable while learning. 

How to Initiate a Drift 

Approach the corner at a manageable speed, turn toward the corner, and use the throttle to break the rear tires loose. As the rear rotates, counter-steer smoothly and modulate the throttle to maintain your angle. 

The key is throttle control. Holding the accelerator at 100% is not always the fastest way to maintain a drift. Feathering the throttle lets you control the car's angle and prevent a spin. 

Final Thoughts 

Building a drift car in Forza Horizon 6 is about finding the balance between power, grip, and control. Start with a predictable RWD car, install the essential drift upgrades, use a high-locking differential, and build a suspension setup that gives you controllable oversteer. 

Most importantly, do not chase huge horsepower numbers immediately. A well-tuned car with predictable throttle response will make learning to drift and eventually setting higher Drift Zone scores much easier. 

Once you have a stable baseline, fine-tune the tire pressure, suspension, differential, and gearing to match your driving style. The best drift tune is ultimately the one that lets you hold the angle you want while remaining easy to correct.
