Before you can recruit any Animal Familiar, you must first defeat Hecate, the initial boss of the game, at least five times.
During these encounters, you'll need to use the Pickaxe twice and the Shovel twice. Additionally, you must free at least one soul using the Tablet of Peace in Hades II.
Once these requirements are met, Hecate will provide you with the Faith of Familiar Spirits incantation, which requires one Lotus and two Nectar to cast.
Successfully performing this incantation will grant you a Witch's Delight, a biscuit-like item that serves as the key to befriending animal familiars.

Frinos - The Loyal Frog
Frinos is a pet that you can get easily. This frog greets you after completing runs and becomes available once you've obtained your first Witch's Delight.
Frinos gives great survivability bonuses, providing you with up to 40 life when maxed to level 10. Besides, it can raise your chance of saving lost souls by 30%, which is very useful in the recruitment quests in Hades II.

Frinos - Combat
Frinos battles through jumping around and absorbing projectiles fired by the enemies that would otherwise strike you.
The defensive option is also helpful against Hecate's transform spell, with Frinos dispelling it completely.
Frinos also eliminates the need to finish the minigame when saving souls, doing the job automatically for you while keeping you busy with other game mechanics in Hades II.

Frinos - Ability
The added chance of discovering lost souls that Frinos gives you makes it much easier to upgrade your characters. You can save lost souls to add to your overall skill, and the psyche you gain from them can be used to upgrade your Arcana knowledge in Hades II.
This psyche is also needed for other spells and incantations throughout the game, so Frinos is a helpful familiar for your game progression.
