Layton Kyouju vs. Gyakuten Saiban: First Look
by Daavpuke on Oct 21, 2010
Now is not the time for pointing fingers! Well, it might actually be the perfect time for it.
J'accuse!
The two most agile crime solvers on handhelds, Professor Layton and Phoenix Wright, will be teaming up in a collaboration between Level-5 and Capcom. The two gentlemen will face up in an upcoming 3DS title called Layton Kyouju vs. Gyakuten Saiban (roughly translated as ‘Professor Layton vs. Ace Attorney’ via Andriasang).
In the cluster that is this crossover epic, the main characters will find themselves transported to a mysterious medieval city, called Labyrinth City. While we aren’t a fan of the unimaginative names that brand Professor Layton games, the story can count on more sympathy. In this strange world, reality and illusion are faded into one, which makes anything possible.
Labyrinth City
Speaking of witches, Labyrinth City also has some of them hiding in the shadows. And it’s due to one of these witches that Phoenix Wright will see himself going to a Witch Trial to defend a person accused of witchcraft.
On the other hand you’ll have Professor Layton solving puzzles and trying to discover the mystery behind the city’s overlord, called Story Teller. This man can make anything he writes come to life, which creates even more incredible situations. The possibilities seem to be limitless in this puzzle extravaganza.
But our beloved puzzle solvers won’t always work merrily side by side as shown in some shots of the game. It seems a rivalry surrounding some cases will develop and a thick plot is once again key.
Trouble In Paradise?
One battle is however already won by none other than Herschel Layton. When Capcom and Level-5 compared sales, the figures came to a sizeable victory for the man in the top hat. The professor Layton series has sold 9.5 million copies worldwide and has more marketing power over the Ace attorney series that still sold 3.9 million copies. This led to the decision to put Layton up front and entice the larger crowd.
This doesn’t mean one franchise will dominate the other in the game itself though. While still a core puzzler, the 2 companies still have an eye open to broaden their horizon and fan base. Capcom stated: “We feel that by drawing upon the strengths of both series, this collaboration will bring new, casual game players to the adventure game genre and into the world of gaming in general while strengthening the value of the two brands overall.”
Phoenix Wright; Staying stylish in Labyrinth City.
The internet is buzzing with its conventional skepticism that there are too many crossovers and mashups these days, but come on! If your heart is still cold after reading all this, you not only detest puzzle games as a whole, you might also not be liking games In general all that much. And in case you forgot, this baby will be in full, no glasses required, 3D. You can go check out the official site for a lot more cool details, including videos.
If you weren’t yet convinced you need a 3DS, this clash of titans can only serve as the proof you need. So, we won’t ask who is excited, because everyone should be. The question is: What are you most excited about? Can you wait for this one or are your adrenaline levels rising with the second like me?
