He first set out to seize the Republic of Aire, whose air force he considered a major threat because even after great advancements in their aerial weaponry, the Republic of Aire was still more advanced in terms speed, performance and experience in air combat. With this he decided to send the 12th armor division named “Iron Horse” and the 73rd infantry battalion one kilometer behind the 91st Tactical Air Squadron named “Steel Wing” in operation “Pegasus”. They planned to bomb Molniya airbase which was the first line of defense of Aire which lay near the borders between the two countries, in the area which will alter be known as Plains of Loss. After the bombing run, the plan was that “Iron Horse” and the 73rd would quickly seize and control the primary defensive line of bunkers and turrets. Then they would seize the hangars and take control of the runway to prevent any more planes to take off to engage “Steel Wing”. That was the plan, at least it was.
They did not think that the ground force of the Republic of Aire would put up a fight since the airbase’s defensive aircraft were quickly outnumbered and were eventually shot down. They were right, except that the majority of the ground forces guarding Molniya Airbase were Tierran forces. The Tierrans intercepted messages from the field commanders of Marina to the capital about their plans, supplies, and other Intel. The guardians of Molniya Airbase were prepared for the onslaught. They intentionally made their base defense aircraft few. They were using a public airport to hold the rest of the aircraft. They sent the aircraft on sorties only when the enemy had low fuel in which they were just playing cat and mouse.
The 91st were being overrun and only few managed to escape but the “Iron Horse” was able to hold out even without their air support since they had brought surface to air weaponry just in case. The fighting was intense, hell on earth one base defender exclaimed. After 3 hours of intense fighting, the 73rd were completely wiped out and the Marinan 12th armor division was forced out of the base’s defensive perimeter back to the plains. With heavy losses, the field commanders ordered the retreat and placed the 64th infantry squad to hold the line while the 12th retreated. Packed with anti-infantry and AT weapons, the 64th were sure they will be able to hold the line until the withdrawal was complete. It was a suicide mission and each one of them new it. Before going to the front lines, they had written letters to their families, some saying “I probably won’t return, I’m sorry” and some stated “I’m sorry if daddy won’t be able to attend your next birthday” and they were all written like suicide notes.
The 64th marched towards the center of the plains, expecting to see tanks and armored vehicles surrounded by infantry and covered by air support but what they saw from afar was just a small squad of infantry. They knew that their enemy were very honorable but did not expect them to be so forgiving. But they were wrong again, the small squad they faced was the Vanguard feared worldwide for their aggressiveness and skill in battle. There were only five of them yet they struck fear into the hearts of the 64th which outnumbered them in a ratio of 4 to 1.When the 64th saw this they began to mumble to themselves, “They maybe legends but we greatly outnumber them, let’s make this quick”.
The 1st member of the feared five was a Lt. Colonel, codenamed “Totoy”. He was an elite sniper and was feared for his specialty in shotguns. The second was also a trained sniper and specialized at using the Arctic Rifle, he was codenamed “Baduy”. He was also the secret weapon of the Vanguard. The other members were “Boloy’ specialized in using the scorpion, “Picoy” the assault trooper carrying his favorite m4 carbine with a red dot sight, and “Latoy” also an assault trooper. Little is known about the Vanguard except that they are armed and very dangerous.
