Michael Jackson 1958-2009
News by ILIAS on Jun 26, 2009
I just got home from work and turned on the telly to see the news around the word and when tuning on CNN, I came across Larry King’s special midnight show. The headline couldn’t have been clearer “MICHAEL JACKSON DEAD”. It is believed that he died of a cardiac arrest, at his residence in Los Angeles. I can't believe it !!!
I can't say that I'm a huge fan of him, but I do own all his albums since "Off the wall". And I'm pretty sure that almost everyone must have danced or dedicated at least one of his songs.
He started his career while he was still a kid with Jackson 5, in the middle 60's. But it was so obvious he had a special talent and charisma. His co-operation with Quincy Jones led to his first hit album "Off the wall" in 1979, which was it was the first album to generate four US top 10 hits, including the chart-topping singles "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" and "Rock with You".
His career hit heights in 1982 with "Thriller", the world's best selling album of all times. The album remained in the top 10 of the Billboard 200 for 80 consecutive weeks, 37 of those weeks at No.1. It was the first album to have seven Billboard Hot 100 top 10 singles, including "Billie Jean", "Beat It", "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin" and "Thriller". It was at that the era that people starting calling him The King of Pop.
Eight years later, he released "Bad". In the US, it spawned 7 hit singles, 5 of them ("I Just Can't Stop Loving You", "Bad", "The Way You Make Me Feel", "Man in the Mirror" and "Dirty Diana") reached number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts, more than any other album. But if you don't mention "Smooth Criminal" this album is half completed.
He then released the movie Moonwalker, which featured live footage, music videos, and a feature film that starred himself and Joe Pesci. Who doesn't know the famous moonwalk dance ?
In 1991, he released "Dangerous". "Black or White", "Remember the time", "In the closet" and "Heal the world" became great hit singles, as well as "Jam" which featured Michael Jordan in the video and "Who is it" which possibly my favourite song of his.
And then things started to get a bit bizarre, if they weren't already with his colour of skin which slowly but steadily was turning from black to white (he had stated that this happened to a very rare skin desease). M.J. got married, had kids but as always happens with great idols, he didn't live long enough to have fun with them, let alone all the court cases of him. But an old Greek saying says "The dead is always right" and I'm not willing to talk about those stuff. I'm sure he'd agree...
Michael was on the verge of his next world tour, the final one, the come back that himself and the fans were awaiting for. You know what ? He's gonna tour, but in front of a difference audience. RIP Michael.
