Companions provide small but meaningful in-battle benefits and can unlock story scenes and side quest chains. Effective party management ensures access to these narrative paths while preserving combat utility. This guide explains how companions work, which ones affect the story, how to recruit or keep them, and how to organize a balanced party of eight.

How Companions and Party Slots Work

As you progress through the story you meet characters who join your party and provide a small benefit when specific conditions are met in battle. You can have up to eight companions at once; new recruits cannot join until you make room.

The Party menu shows all companions you have met and which are currently active; selecting an active companion lets you review details and remove them. To add a companion, travel to the location stated for that character.

Story-Relevant Companions

Some companions are tied to narrative content. Keeping them in your party triggers cutscenes and unlocks side quest series related to them. These companions are Darkhunter, Adhakus, Drong, Flicker, Sunspear, Patch, Winter, and Elistara. While not required to complete the game, they add notable content and context.

Important Choices That Affect Companions

In Winter Wolf Quest 4.1 Wolf Pack (Ylarie), choosing to help the wolves awards gold and experience and unlocks future quests from Winter; chasing them instead grants the Wolfbane Cloak but prevents future Winter quests and removes the option to have Winter as a companion.

If you released the necromancer during Main Quest 1.8 The Prisoner, a special late-game quest becomes available. Following it causes some followers to leave permanently unless you remove them from the party beforehand and re-add them after the quest ends. The affected characters include Winter, Elistara, Khalkus, Flicker, and Serephine.

Managing Setups for Different Playstyles

For builds that rely on consistent story content and flexibility, maintaining the eight-slot party with the story-relevant companions ensures access to their scenes and side quests.

When optimizing purely for combat benefits, rotate companions whose conditional bonuses match your battle plan, but keep in mind location-based recruitment and the need to free slots before key story junctures. These practices preserve access to content while aligning companion triggers with your preferred damage, mana, or control strategies.
