Every battle in Puzzle Quest Immortal is different because of a mix of luck, tactics, and planning. Chance does play a part, but mastering the mechanics is what makes growth steady. This part goes over the basics of fights and the main factors that affect how they turn out. This will help you feel more confident going into battles.
Fights

Fights take place through a match-3 puzzle system where you and your opponent alternate turns, matching gems. These matches grant mana to cast spells, earn gold, gain experience, and inflict damage. Success depends on more than just luck—careful choices and thoughtful planning will increase your odds of victory.
Whenever possible, aim for 4- or 5-of-a-kind matches. These grant you an extra turn, essentially providing free value. When multiple options exist, prioritize matches at the top of the board, since those at the bottom may disrupt potential chains above. The only exception is when a match yields little benefit, such as mana of an unused color, while breaking a crucial setup.
Multiple matches in a single move bring additional benefits. These increase overall value and raise the chances of triggering a Lucky Match, which grants an extra turn. Denying opportunities to your opponent is equally important.
Prevent them from accessing skulls, 4- or 5-of-a-kind matches, or gems of their primary mana colors, especially if they are close to unleashing a powerful spell or finishing you off.
Difficulty

The game features a dynamic difficulty system that adjusts challenges based on performance. This means even when battles feel repetitive, new challenges can arise to keep you alert. Strong enemies can sometimes appear earlier than expected, and preparation through balanced builds and gear choices will help mitigate sudden spikes in difficulty.
Damage

There are two main ways to do damage in battle: matching skulls and casting magic. Skull matches deal direct damage that is increased by the Battle stat. Spells, on the other hand, depend on how much mana is available.
It is important to balance these two types of damage. Some builds depend on doing a lot of damage to the skull, while others put more emphasis on throwing spells. Knowing how to do both will make you more flexible in different fights.
On Randomness and Bad Luck

Randomness plays a significant role in outcomes, as gem cascades and Lucky Matches can shift the tide instantly. At times, you may lose due to unfortunate board states or lucky strikes from enemies.
Know that these times are built into the game and focus on methods that give you the most control over chance. Converting gems, setting up extra turns, and planning ahead can help you depend less on luck and increase your chances of winning.
