Researchable spells in Puzzle Quest Immortal expand your toolkit beyond class abilities, letting you cover weaknesses or amplify synergies. These spells are usually more expensive due to the research cost increase, but they can be invaluable for builds that need specific effects such as gem conversion, stun control, or explosive finishers. This guide highlights the strongest options, explains their practical value, and tells you where to obtain them.
How Research Spells Fit Into Your Build

The game offers a high number of researchable spells that can be used by any class. These are usually more expensive than class spells due to the 50% cost increase, but can be really helpful to get some effects the class lacks or improve the class synergies.
Some spells are clearly weaker than others. However, many spells share a similar power level with different effects, so it is not always easy to know which ones are better. The researchable spell list in the PQ1 Guide spreadsheet includes personal ratings that help compare and choose what to use for your build.
Use these ratings as general guidelines rather than a hard truth, think and experiment by yourself, and reach your own conclusions. Proactive, offensive, and fast strategies tend to rate higher for efficiency, but the main goal is enjoyment, so you should always pick what feels most fun.
Best Researchable Spells (Top Picks)
Berserker Rage and Stone Gaze convert all red or green gems into skulls and grant a bonus move if your red or green mana is 15 or more. Using one or the other depends on your specific build.
Builds that can create red gems benefit more from Berserker Rage, while builds that can create green gems benefit more from Stone Gaze. If you need the gems to match, choose the spell that does not convert them. You can obtain Berserker Rage from King Minotaurs in Chapter 3 and Stone Gaze from Medusas at the end of Chapter 2.
Burn converts all green gems into red gems. It is cheap, available early, and really useful. It can give you a lot of red mana and works really well with effects that trigger on 4- and 5-of-a-kind matches. It is a very good spell for the early and mid game and a must for some builds later. You can obtain it from Imps in Chapter 1.

Conflagration lets you select a gem and convert all gems of matching type to red gems. It is more expensive, available later, and more difficult to research than Burn, but being able to select which gems to convert makes it a better spell. It is a must for builds wanting red gems and for board-shuffling strategies. You can obtain it from Fire Giants in Chapter 3.
Burial converts all skulls and gold coins into green gems. It is the only researchable spell that converts two gem types, making it much stronger at creating gems of the color and generating 4+ matches.
It converts gold coins, which are usually low value, but also skulls, which are high value. As with other gem-creating spells, it is always a great choice. You can obtain it from Doomknights at the beginning of Chapter 4.
Freeze and Electrify convert all red gems into blue or yellow gems and then add +1 to blue or yellow mana for each gem converted. These are as good as other conversion spells and even give you extra mana.
They are a must for builds that want blue or yellow mana and for board-shuffling builds. You can obtain Freeze from Ice Giants in Chapter 3 and Electrify from Storm Giants in Chapter 2.
Entangle and Petrify make your enemy miss one or two turns, plus one more turn for every 20 green mana you have. These are great spells that can give you several turns in a row to develop your plan or combine spells and effects.

They can stun-lock the enemy if your green mana is high enough and you can earn back the mana used during the recharge time. A high Earth Mastery focus gets the most out of them.
Petrify has the stronger effect by stunning one extra turn, but its casting cost is more expensive, so some builds may prefer Entangle instead. You can obtain Entangle from Elven Guards in Chapter 3 and Petrify from Medusas at the end of Chapter 2.
Death Gaze halves your enemy’s life and then creates a skull for every five damage dealt, up to a maximum of ten skulls. It is one of the strongest researchable spells and can deal tremendous damage both directly and through the created skulls.
The expensive cost, high research difficulty, and the risk of the skulls benefiting the opponent prevent it from being an automatic inclusion. It works best when you can stun the opponent to avoid the risk of skull creation. You can obtain it from Liches in Chapter 1.
When To Prioritize Each Spell
When you need raw red mana and early momentum, Burn comes online first and kickstarts aggressive plans. When precision matters for setting up chains and sustained red dominance, Conflagration takes over.
If the build feeds on green while denying skulls, Burial delivers unmatched board control. For blue or yellow-centric engines, Freeze and Electrify both ramp mana and add bonus gains, enabling immediate recasts and 4+ chains.

If your strategy revolves around permanent pressure through extra turns, Entangle and Petrify create the window to assemble combos safely. When the goal is a dramatic finisher or a huge life swing, Death Gaze becomes a premier closer, especially alongside reliable stun support.
Finally, if your plan is to flood the board with skulls and convert pressure into lethal damage quickly, Berserker Rage and Stone Gaze provide the fastest path to overwhelming control.
