The Word of the Year 2007

 

 

Who has the habit of playing games online (or even talk to nerds / geeks / gamers) must have heard the expression: W00t! If your team won, woot! If you beat a monster , W00t! You had the most beautiful headshot in history, spreading joy and brains on the floor, W00t! It is an expression of success, excitement, victory, joy, and it stands for :We Own the Other Team.

The American publisher of Merriam-Webster dictionary, which since 2003 chooses a word of importance or popularity, chose this small interjection of four letters (or two letters and two numbers) as the Word of the Year 2007. I think it's so surreal. W00t!

The Words of the Year in previous years were "truthiness" (with "google"  in second, in 2006), "integrity", "blog" and "democracy." The closer a word minimally gamer / nerd came in first was in 2003 when the word "matrix" was fourth.
