Tomb Raider Guide | How to Enter the Lost City of Kitezh

Here's a guide on how to enter the Lost City of Kitezh in Tomb Raider.

Your objective is to find a way into the lost city of Kitezh. After regaining control, you will first gather resources and navigate a series of initial areas, which contain several collectibles and area challenges.

Initial Area and Resources

When you regain control, look for nearby Mushrooms to loot. Follow the hallway to the end and squeeze through a crack into the next room. In this room, more Mushrooms are located by a frozen puddle. Continue up the stairs for a brief scene and objective update.

Reaching the Frozen City

After the scene, turn around. Behind Lara, there is another Mushroom to loot. Follow the platform north, past a zip line, to find a campfire.

Approach it to unlock the Base Camp called Threshold of Kitezh. Use this camp to apply upgrades and spend skill points.

Area Challenges Overview

Throughout this initial section of the Lost City map, three area challenges are active:

For Whom the Bell Tolls: Find and cut down a series of Bells.

Banner Wars: Find and destroy square flag Banners with Fire Arrows.

Vandals: Find and shoot headless Statues with explosives or firearms.

First Document and Zip-Line Descent

On the railing directly behind the Zip-Line, there is a Document [01/08 - Mongolian]. Collect it. If you have collected all previous Documents and Relics, Lara will now reach Level 2 proficiency in Mongolian. Use the Zip-Line to descend to the next area.

First Bell and Banner

From the building you land on, drop to the ledge below. Approach the Bell here and cut its rope [For Whom the Bell Tolls 01/05]. A slanted wooden platform leads to another rooftop. From here, you can see another Bell above.

Before climbing, look on the wall below and to the left to spot a Deathless Banner. Shoot it with a Fire Arrow [Banner Wars 01/08].

Second Bell and Trapdoor

Jump and scramble up into the bell room at the top of the building to the east to find another Bell [For Whom the Bell Tolls 02/05].

On the balcony, locate a wheel mechanism. Look down from this to the northeast to see a trapdoor. Hit it with a Rope Arrow and use the mechanism to open it. Leave it for now.

Third Bell and Second Banner

Drop down to the previous rooftop. In the distance, you will see a third Bell. Before heading over, look at the building in the foreground; on the wall facing you, another Banner is displayed.

Shoot it [Banner Wars 02/08], then run to the Bell and cut it down [For Whom the Bell Tolls 03/05]. Grab the nearby Salvage crate.

Eliminating Deathless Soldiers

Return to the rooftop from the Zip-Line. Move to its eastern side and look down. You will see two Deathless soldiers. Drop down and eliminate both with stealth kills.

Survival Cache and Monolith

At ground level, check near the southern wall of this building to find a Survival Cache [01/06]. With the building at your back, follow the icy cliff face to the right to locate a Monolith. Decipher it (requires Level 2 Mongolian) to reveal Coin Cache locations.

Third and Fourth Banners and First Coin Cache

From the Monolith, look directly south to find a Banner on a distant wall [Banner Wars 03/08].

Look directly north at the building to find another Banner [Banner Wars 04/08]. On the ground beside this second Banner, you will find a Coin Cache [01/03].

Relic and Return to Building

Return to the base of the building you zip-lined onto. Move up its right-hand side to the north to find stairs leading down. At the bottom, turn left and enter the building through an open window. Inside is a chest containing a Relic [01/10 – Amber Necklace]. Exit the same way and backtrack up the stairs.

Mural and First Vandal Statue

At the top of the stairs, to the left, you will see a large staircase in front of a building. At the top are a Salvage crate and a Mural [01/03 - Greek]. There is also a headless statue here. Destroy it with gunfire to begin the Vandal challenge [Vandal 01/08].

Second Survival Cache

Drop down from this platform and follow the very eastern wall of the map north. At the bottom of the first set of stairs, look to the right side of a puddle to find a Survival Cache [02/06].

Trapdoor Room and Archivist Map

Enter the building opposite using a ground-level window. On a table to the left as you enter is a pile of Byzantine Coins. Use the wall beside some wooden latticework to scramble up to a handhold above. On the second floor, drop into the trapdoor you opened earlier to find a basket of Herbs and an Archivist's Map. Use a Rope Arrow to remove a blockage from the door to exit.

Fifth Banner and Second Coin Cache

Follow the eastern wall of the map north until you reach a clearing. Turn and look back at the building you just passed.

On the right side of the wall facing you is another Banner [Banner Wars 05/08]. At the base of the window of the building, just to the right of this, is another Coin Cache [02/03].
