Why Fortnite is the Best Current Battle Royale Game

How does Fortnite stand out against the competition

Fortnite has taken the gaming world by storm. With millions of gamers logging into Epic Games' smash hit looking for rare weapons, building forts, and trying to survive the horde of enemy players. Despite PlayerUnknown's Battleground popularizing the genre and the recently release Radical Heights trying to capitalize on the genre, Fortnite remains on top, but why? What makes Fortnite a set ahead other battle royale games?

It's hard to ignore Fortnite's distinct look. Right from the beginning players are bombarded with colorful graphics and a unique style. The artist at Epic Games has taken the battle royale formula and given their own distinct look to the entire game. Weapons, character models, individually named items give Fortnite its own identity that can be easily recognized. This is not the case with PlayerUnknown's Battleground.

PlayerUnknown's Battleground is more realistic in how it presents itself. The game features a more practical found in many other games such as Call of Duty and Battlefield and this isn't a bad thing. It works for the game's style but without anything unique, it makes it harder to feel distinguished. Energy drinks, medkits, and even the buildings themselves look similar to other games. Fortnite has items that only its game features with individual names for each, case and point is the Port-A-Fort which builds an entire fortress immediately.

This also extends to other games like the recently revealed Radical Heights. It's early to fully compared the 2 but the game has been criticized for not having that appealing originality to it. It does feature an 80s era style with cartoonish visuals and a cel-shaded style but putting side by side to Fortnite highlights the similarities in how they both look. Since Fortnite has grown exponentially many seeing this look will, and have, already made the comparison to Fortnite.

This is not to say Fortnite doesn't play well, it does. Controls and mechanics are responsive and Epic Games have continuously updated the title with new items to keep players hooked. The same goes for PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds with a healthy community of players and Radical Heights is slowly building its own following. However, Fortnite is free which gives more players a better reason to try it over PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds and is much more stable than the recently released Radical Heights.

Fortnite has crafted the perfect storm to encourage gamers to try it and keep playing. The distinct style helps it stand out from other games within the genre and being free-to-play gives players the option to try the game without having to invest anything in it. This is not to say it's a superior game, that's a matter of preference. However, it's the best option for now.
