The MSI Claw 8 AI has just become far more exciting thanks to Microsoft's latest Windows 11 update. This $1,000 handheld has received a set of transformative changes that make it feel like something straight out of Xbox's playbook.

With the new Windows 11 Insider Build 7,51, Microsoft has delivered five major updates that redefine how handheld gaming feels on Windows devices.

A Console-Like Boot Experience

The first and most significant update is the new Xbox Full Screen Experience Mode. Originally seen on the ROG Ally line, this interface overhaul transforms the way handheld gaming feels on Windows.

When you power up the device, you're immediately greeted with your Xbox Game Pass library—no keyboard, no messy desktop, just clean navigation through games using the device's joysticks and triggers.

We can now boot directly into gaming without having to juggle between launchers or desktop modes. The MSI Claw 8 AI finally behaves like a console, offering true plug-and-play gaming on Windows. It's the experience handheld players have been asking for since the very beginning.

Performance Optimization for Smoother Gameplay

The second major update focuses on performance optimization. One of the biggest complaints about Windows handhelds has always been system bloat,, which consumes too much RAM before games even start. Microsoft clearly listened.

According to ETA Prime's testing, switching from standard desktop mode to Xbox Full Screen Mode reduces memory usage from 7.3GB to 6.2GB, a savings of over 1.1 GB. For a 16GB handheld, that's a significant improvement, freeing up memory for demanding titles like Cyberpunk 2077 or Black Myth: Wukong.

We also noticed significant performance gains. In benchmark tests, Cyberpunk 2077 at 1200p, medium settings, and 30W TDP jumped from 55fps to 61fps—a solid 10% boost just from a software-level optimization. Other games, such as Forza Horizon 5 and Wukong, showed smaller but consistent FPS increases. Battery life remained unchanged, but with higher frames per watt, it's still a definite win.

Integration with MSI's Tools

The third update brings seamless integration with MSI's own software tools. The Xbox Full Screen Mode doesn't lock users out of the MSI ecosystem. You can still access the MSI Quick Settings panel to adjust TDP, fan curves, power limits, or brightness without leaving the interface.

The MSI Center M app can now connect directly to the Xbox Game Bar, allowing you to adjust performance settings while playing. Suppose you see a tiny frame loss while playing Forza Horizon 5. In that case, you can easily adjust the TDP or switch performance modes without stopping the game. That level of ease and smoothness gives the handheld experience a console-level polish.

Wider OEM Support on the Horizon

The fourth update changes the game for the whole portable environment. Microsoft said that the Xbox Full Screen Mode will not only work with the MSI Claw. Other manufacturers, including ROG Ally, Lenovo Legion Go, and potentially future Xbox-branded handhelds, are expected to embrace this uniform interface.

We're now seeing Microsoft's long-term strategy unfold—creating a standardized, console-like Windows handheld ecosystem. This unified approach not only simplifies user experience but also makes it easier for developers to optimize performance across multiple devices.

With AMD's Ryzen Z2 Extreme APU already setting performance benchmarks, the handheld market is clearly entering a new phase.

Early Flaws and Limitations

Of course, there are problems with every early build. The sixth update addresses the problems that testers have identified thus far. Currently, the launcher can only locate large game clients, such as Steam, Xbox, and Epic. Players who use emulators, modifications, or third-party overlays will still need to add them manually or use Steam's non-Steam Shortcut option.

You can't move tiles around or use themes yet, so your customization options are currently limited. It makes sense that Microsoft would prioritize reliability and performance over visual customization for an early-access release.

Even with these small problems, the main point is that everything works immediately away. No hacks, no changes to the registry, just smooth, official operation.

Future of Windows Handheld Gaming

These updates may seem incremental, but together they mark a turning point. Windows handhelds are finally being treated as a dedicated category rather than miniature laptops. For years, Linux-based systems like Steam Deck had the advantage of feeling console-like—lightweight, quick-booting, and focused on gaming first.

Now, the MSI Claw 8 AI closes that gap. With Intel's latest chips and Microsoft's software-level optimization, we finally get a true hybrid of console convenience and PC versatility. A simple mode switch can yield up to 10% more FPS, which shows how far OS-level optimization has come.

We're witnessing the start of a handheld renaissance. Windows handhelds are no longer just an experiment; they're the future of portable gaming. Microsoft is investing more effort into full-screen gaming, collaborating closely with hardware partners, and refining performance.
