Before you can meet Liu Cheng'en, you need to finish specific tasks and find your way to him in Cloudspire Outskirts.

This encounter is moderately challenging but can be handled well with good preparation and the right strategy in Wuchang: Fallen Feathers.

Prerequisites and Location

First, you must defeat Ai Nengqi at Rebel Camp to lower the drawbridge to Liu Cheng'en. Alternatively, you can light the three signal fires on the tower roofs to open the drawbridge.

Once you've completed this requirement, fast travel back to Cloudspire Outskirts.

If you've already opened the shortcut, enter through the door positioned to the right of the shrine in Wuchang: Fallen Feathers.

Follow the path upward and turn right to cross the drawbridge, which will take you directly to the boss encounter. If the shortcut remains locked, you can access the area from the opposite side where the Rebel Camp is located.

Recommended Setup

Your weapon of choice in Wuchang: Fallen Feathers should be an axe. It offers the best combat strategy against this opponent.

Make sure you've reached level 45 or higher before you try this fight. Doing so will give you enough health and damage to handle the battle easily.

Concentrate your skill points on axe upgrades that improve Strength and Vitality. Buy Bone Needle – Leech from the left skill tree. This item is essential for sustaining yourself during the fight. Apply this buff to your axe before you engage Liu Cheng'en in Wuchang: Fallen Feathers.

Combat Strategy

Liu Cheng'en employs frostbite damage and switches between a spear and a one-handed sword during combat.

Every two successful hits he lands will inflict frostbite status on you, which reduces your stamina by half for a brief period. However, this limitation won't significantly impact your axe-based strategy in Wuchang: Fallen Feathers.

Begin the encounter by dodging his first three attacks. After evading these initial strikes, execute a charged heavy attack followed by a series of quick attacks until your stamina depletes.

Repeat this pattern consistently throughout the fight. The Leech effect from your buffed axe will restore your health as you deal damage, so keep up aggressive pressure on the boss.

Watch your health closely and heal whenever it drops below half. The life-stealing effect will help you stay alive as long as you continue to attack.

Phase Transition

When Liu Cheng'en reaches half health, he will try a special grab attack aimed at slicing your throat.

You will hear a distinct chime that signals this upcoming attack. Stay away from the boss when he hits this health point and wait for him to miss the grab.

When Liu Cheng'en is unable to grab you, he will switch from his spear to his sword.

This is a phase where his attacks will deal more damage, so you need to pay more attention to your positioning and timing.

Second Phase Tactics

During the sword phase, use charged heavy attacks with your axe when Liu Cheng'en attacks.

This will trigger the Clash effect, allowing you to follow up with light attacks. The final hit of your combo sequence restores stamina, enabling you to cycle combos indefinitely.

This mechanic makes the frostbite stamina reduction irrelevant for axe users.

Watch out for his stomp attack, which delivers heavy damage and cannot trigger the clash effect since it's a bare-handed strike.

When Liu Cheng'en summons a storm around himself, land one final combo before dodging away to avoid getting trapped within the storm's area of effect in Wuchang: Fallen Feathers.

Rewards

Upon defeating Liu Cheng'en, you'll receive a Wooden Strip for Tao Qing shop upgrade, the spell Echo of Liu Cheng'en, and the Ming General – Liu Cheng'en achievement.

With proper preparation and execution of the outlined strategy, you can overcome this encounter through sustained aggression and the healing provided by your Leech-buffed axe in Wuchang: Fallen Feathers.
