AMD Ryzen 7 7700X Review: Zen 4 Performance and Gaming Benchmarks Compared

Ryzen 7 7700X represents AMD's latest iteration of the Zen 4 architecture, combining high clock speeds with a single CCD design to maximize both gaming and productivity performance. Featuring 8 cores and 16 threads, it is designed for the AM5 socket and supports the latest DDR5 memory and PCIe 5.0 connectivity.

With a TDP of 105W, this processor promises strong performance while remaining efficient.

Specifications and Pricing

Ryzen 7 7700X clocks between 4.7 GHz and 5.4 GHz, depending on the workload, and features a 32MB L3 cache, a 6MB L2 cache, and 28 PCIe 5.0 lanes. Surprisingly, AMD has reduced the launch MSRP to $400, down from Ryzen 7 5800X's $450, marking an 11% discount for a faster processor. 

However, the older 5800X can currently be found for $280, meaning 7700X comes in at a 43% premium. Comparisons to the 5800X3D, priced at $430, provide a closer pricing matchup and offer a more relevant benchmark for prospective buyers.

Test System Setup

We tested 7700X against a range of Zen 2, Zen 3, and Intel 10th and 12th-generation CPUs. Memory configurations included DDR4 3200 dual-rank CL14 and DDR5 6400 single-rank CL32. The AM5 system utilized the MSI MEG X670E Ace motherboard with supplied DDR5-6000CL30 memory, and all tests were run on Windows 11 using a GeForce RTX 3090Ti with resizable BAR enabled.

Clock Frequency Behavior

Under a full hour of Cinebench R23 multi-core load, the 7700X maintained an all-core frequency of 5.1 GHz with a Be Quiet Pure Loop 2 FX 360mm liquid cooler. For single-core workloads, the CPU achieved a frequency of 5.55 GHz, exceeding the advertised boost by 150 MHz.

Productivity Performance

In Cinebench R23, the 7700X performed closely to the 12-core 5900X, with a 3% slower result, while its single-core performance slightly surpassed that of the 12700K. 7-Zip file compression showed 7700X beating the 16-core 3950X and trailing the 5950X by just 7%, while offering almost 20% better performance than the 12700K. 

In Blender Open Data, it was paired with 3900X and 12700K. Corona Benchmark results showed that it outperformed the 3900X and 5800X by 21%, but was 7% slower than the 12700K. Tests using Adobe Premiere Pro 2022 and Photoshop 2022 also revealed significant improvements, with the 7700X outperforming the 12-core 12700K and 5800X by a considerable margin.

Code compilation performance also matched that of the 12700K, depending on the memory configuration, while offering 50% faster results than the 5800X.

Gaming Performance

In Factorio, 7700X ranked between the 7600X and 7950X, about 6% faster than the 12700K but 45% slower than the 5800X3D. Watch Dogs: Legion demonstrated a 10% performance lead over the 7600X and a 30% gain over the 5800X, placing it on par with the 12700K. 

Rainbow Six Extraction showed the 7700X just 3% slower than the 12700K with DDR5 memory. High-end gaming capabilities were confirmed by Hitman 3 and Tiny Tina's Wonderlands, while certain games had clear GPU restrictions. Nearly 30% generational improvements were shown in the F1 22 testing, which showed an 18% edge over 12700K and a 28% lead over 5800X.

Spider-Man Remastered, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, and Horizon Zero Dawn results were solid, with gains over previous Ryzen models ranging from 12% to 26%. In Cyberpunk 2077, 7700X trailed the 12700K by 10% but still improved one-percent lows over 7600X. Assetto Corsa Competizione showed a 12% gap behind 5800X3D but was 14% faster than 12700K. In The Riftbreaker, it outperformed 12700K by 4%. 

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive highlighted the CPU's potential, achieving 543 fps, 29% faster than 12700K and almost 50% faster than 5800X. The 12-game average confirmed 7700X as the top performer, 6% ahead of the similarly priced 12700K and 21% faster than the 5800X.

Power and Cooling

All-core workloads showed total system power slightly higher than that of the 5900X but below that of the 12700K. Cooling behavior aligns with AMD's design, allowing CPUs to reach TJ Max of 95°C for maximum performance without risk. 

Testing with the Pure Loop 2 FX recorded a peak of 97°C, slightly above TJ Max, confirming thermal headroom utilization. AM4 coolers are mostly compatible with AM5, except for those using non-removable rear backplates.

Value Analysis

When the cost per frame was taken into account, 7700X was only slightly quicker than 7600X, but 33% more expensive. It is only 6% more expensive per frame than 7600X, making it comparable with Intel alternatives when motherboard and RAM prices are taken into account.

7700X performs well in mixed single-core and multi-core applications, such as Premiere Pro. However, higher-core CPUs like 7950X are preferred for core-intensive productivity workloads.

Final Thoughts

With comparable prices and superior performance in the majority of tested games, Ryzen 7 7700X becomes the new king of gaming. It is presently the suggested Zen 4 CPU for gamers. The choice between the 7600X and 7700X largely depends on whether you are building a new system from scratch. AM5 platform investments, including quality motherboards and DDR5 memory, provide future-proofing for upcoming Zen 6 CPUs. 

While Intel's 13th-generation CPUs may offer competition, AM5's longevity and Zen 4 performance make the 7700X a strong and sensible investment for gaming enthusiasts.
