Game-Changing Features No One Expected in Console and PC Hardware
Surprising hardware innovations introduced unexpected shifts in gaming technology and reshaped long-term expectations across multiple console generations.

The evolution of gaming hardware has been marked by surprising features that shifted expectations across the industry.
Many technologies that are now standard were once shocking reveals, and moments of genuine surprise have often defined how players and developers viewed the next generation of consoles and hardware innovations.

Revisiting Early Shocks in Hardware Announcements
When we look back, we remember times when things that seem normal now were new and exciting when they were first introduced. We went back in time to watch our coverage of PS5 and Xbox Series X debuts again, and hearing things like NVME SSDs and hardware-accelerated ray tracing really surprised us at the time.
You see how what's common now once felt almost unbelievable. That kind of surprise is part of why we stay excited about covering the industry. You never really know what's coming next.
Gamescom 2018 remains one of the biggest shock moments. Jensen's unveiling of machine learning and hardware-accelerated ray tracing left Alex literally slack-jawed. We were watching him react as he stared at Jensen on stage, and it was unforgettable.
That ranks among our most surprised reactions ever, but there were others, too. For instance, the announcement of G-Sync was wild because we had never even considered a display with a variable refresh rate. The concept simply hadn't crossed our minds, so hearing it for the first time felt unreal.
Handheld Surprises and Console Left Turns
One unforgettable moment was seeing the PSP for the first time. We didn't expect a portable system to deliver that level of capability in 2004. It was shockingly ahead of its time and felt almost impossible for a handheld.
Nintendo Wii is another major example of an unexpected direction. No matter how you feel about it, it didn't fit in with what was going on in the industry. It got rid of the idea of a jump between generations. It used GameCube technology, but at a faster clock speed.
It came with a bizarre remote that you could control with your body. It looked like nothing else. Wii's pointer system, its new way of controlling games, and the Virtual Console all seemed quite ahead of their time. It was a total left turn in an industry moving steadily in the opposite direction.
Wii's codename, "Revolution," added even more intrigue. The real revolution wasn't the hardware power but the controller, and it fundamentally changed how we thought about interaction in games. Nintendo had already experimented with bold controllers through the N64, but the Wii took it much further.

Features That Redefined Expectations
We remember other surprising events besides the well-known one from 2018. The Xbox One's HDMI input and G-Sync were two of the best features. It basically made the console a capture device, so you could connect any HDMI source and show it on the UI.
It wasn't something we had seen before or since, and once we experimented with it, its uniqueness became even clearer. It essentially built a capture card directly into the console.
The Xbox One era was full of unexpected (and sometimes unwelcome) features, including Kinect. We maintain that Kinect played a huge role in derailing Xbox's momentum at the time. Without Kinect, Xbox might have been in a far stronger position.
Still, Wii's success pushed companies to pursue motion control. Some Kinect features were interesting from a technological standpoint, but many game ideas wouldn't work without buttons or physical feedback. You didn't know if your input was recognized, and without that tactile feedback, you were frustrated very quickly.
There were moments where Kinect genuinely shone—Dance Central was a blast, and some motion-based games were fun—but most of the time the tech didn't align with how games needed to work. It was exciting research, but better suited for uses outside gaming.

Iconic Moments of Technological Leap
We also think about times when we didn't expect a product to be as revolutionary as it turned out to be. We were blown away by the first PlayStation, especially Ridge Racer. It set the standard for what 3D console visuals might be.
Another example is the Voodoo Graphics card. When it came out, it was way better than anything else, making all other hardware instantly useless. We still joke about never forgiving John Carmack for making our Rendition Vérité outdated almost immediately.
During a visit to Microsoft in 2020, I learned something interesting about what goes on behind the scenes. Andrew Gusen, the head architect for Xbox, informed us that hardware-accelerated ray tracing had been in the works since 2016, well before Nvidia showed off its own RT technologies.
It shows how far forward platform architects think, even when they can't make public statements because of costs or other practical reasons.
Looking Back on Forgotten Surprises
There are probably a lot of features we forgot about over the years that we didn't expect. Supporters who go through the archives often remind us of things that surprised us at the time but that we don't recall very well today.
The industry changes quickly, and surprises come and go. Part of the fun is rediscovering what once seemed new and exciting.
