MSI's upcoming Claw 8 EX AI Plus handheld is drawing attention not only for Intel's new Arc G3 Extreme processor but also for its rapidly fluctuating price. As the handheld approaches its June 23 launch date, multiple retailer listings have been updated, creating confusion about the final cost and whether any launch bundle is actually included.
At the same time, MSI has acknowledged that rising component costs are making it increasingly difficult to deliver gaming hardware at lower prices.
MSI Addresses Rising Costs Ahead of Launch
MSI recently weighed in on the problems facing portable makers, saying it will be a tough year for the firm and for gamers. According to MSI product marketing lead Andy Chuang, rising memory and storage costs have significantly impacted pricing. The company reportedly explored various approaches to reduce component costs, but the final impact is still reflected in the current retail price.

The MSI Claw 8 EX AI Plus is built around Intel's Arc G3 Extreme processor, which may be the strongest handheld-focused chip Intel has produced so far. The issue is not the silicon itself but rather how expensive the overall package has become. While the handheld market continues to see impressive technological advancements, affordability is becoming a growing concern as prices rise across the industry.
Confusion Surrounds Claw 8 EX AI Plus's $1,799 Price Tag
Claw 8 EX AI Plus features 32GB of RAM, a 1TB SSD, and an 8-inch display with Variable Refresh Rate support, closely resembling the existing Claw lineup. MSI's official store currently lists the device at $1,799.
Previously, both Newegg and Best Buy displayed the handheld at $1,699, leading many to believe that MSI's higher price may have included a launch bundle. However, there has never been a clear indication on the MSI store page itself that any launch pack was included with the purchase.
While some reports suggested that a launch bundle was part of the offer, the store listing never explicitly stated this. Anyone who has already secured a preorder may ultimately be able to confirm whether any extras are included, but based on the information currently available, the $1,799 listing appears to be for the handheld alone.
Retailer Listings Begin Matching MSI's Pricing
One of the more notable developments involves Best Buy's pricing. The retailer briefly displayed preorder availability at $1,699 before the listing returned to a "coming soon" status. Since then, the price has been updated to $1,799.
This adjustment is particularly interesting because no additional accessories, launch pack, or bonus items were added to justify the increase. The product page simply moved from $1,699 to $1,799.
Newegg still lists the handheld at $1,699, but given Best Buy's recent change, it appears increasingly likely that Newegg's price will eventually rise to match MSI's official listing. At the moment, there is no indication that the lower retailer price includes any additional content.

Launch Pack References Have Disappeared
Another detail adding to the uncertainty is the apparent removal of launch pack references from MSI's promotional material. Earlier versions of the Claw 8 EX AI Plus product page featured a launch pack section. However, that content has since been removed. Not only does the MSI store page not mention the launch bundle, but the promotional website no longer displays it either.
The removal appears deliberate rather than accidental, further suggesting that the handheld's current $1,799 price may not include any special preorder bonuses. While it remains possible that preorder customers could still receive additional items, there is currently little visible evidence supporting that expectation.
Why MSI Chose a Premium Configuration
MSI has not explained why the Claw 8 EX AI Plus launched exclusively with Intel's Arc G3 Extreme processor instead of offering a lower-cost configuration using the standard Arc G3 chip. Likewise, the company has not announced any models featuring 16GB or 24GB of RAM.
The decision suggests that MSI wanted to position the handheld as a premium flagship device rather than compete in a lower price segment. Reducing memory size could have lowered costs, but the decrease from 32GB to 24GB may not have saved enough to meaningfully impact the final retail price.
At the same time, a drop in specifications could have drawn criticism from consumers expecting advancements over prior Claw models. MSI has already upgraded controls, buttons, and other hardware components, and a premium configuration is a natural extension to the series.
Future Competition Could Offer Lower Prices
Upcoming handhelds may provide a clearer picture of how much memory and component choices impact pricing.
Acer's Predator handheld, expected later in the year, is reportedly targeting a 24GB memory configuration and will launch with both Arc G3 and Arc G3 Extreme options. That combination may offer a better balance between gaming performance and overall system memory allocation, with 8GB dedicated to VRAM and 16GB available for the operating system and applications.
The larger question is how much cheaper Acer's approach will be compared to MSI's flagship configuration. If Acer successfully lowers costs through memory reductions and other hardware adjustments, it could create significant pressure on premium handheld pricing.
There is also speculation that Intel's standard Arc G3 processor may not yet be ready for a broad launch. Current expectations suggest broader availability may arrive closer to September or October, which could explain why MSI launched exclusively with the Arc G3 Extreme variant.

Strong Hardware Arrives During a Difficult Market
There is little doubt that Arc G3 Extreme brings promising technology to the handheld gaming space. Its stronger GPU focus and support for XeSS 3 with Multi Frame Generation could make it one of the most capable handheld chips currently available.
The challenge is timing. The first Arc G3 Extreme handheld is arriving as a premium 32GB model amid rising component prices. MSI clearly intends for the Claw 8 EX AI Plus to sit above both the previous Claw 8 AI Plus and other existing handheld offerings, but the resulting price point places it far beyond what many consumers expected when Intel first introduced its next-generation handheld platform.
Pricing Remains the Main Story
The most significant development over the past few days has not been hardware specifications but pricing adjustments. Best Buy's increase from $1,699 to $1,799, the disappearance of launch-pack references, and MSI's comments about rising costs all point to a straightforward conclusion: $1,799 increasingly appears to be the actual retail price of the MSI Claw 8 EX AI Plus.
As launch day approaches, additional details may emerge regarding preorder bonuses or alternative configurations. For now, however, the handheld appears set to arrive as a premium device with one of the highest price tags in the Windows gaming handheld market.
MSI's comments suggest that elevated pricing may not be a short-term issue either. With component costs continuing to rise, the remainder of this year and potentially next year could remain challenging for both manufacturers and consumers hoping to adopt the latest handheld gaming hardware.
