Gaming laptops at the top end are still inching toward full desktop-replacement territory, and MSI's new Raider 16 Max HX is designed specifically for that crowd. This system is all about uncompromising gaming performance and comes packed with flagship-tier hardware, aggressive cooling, upgrade-friendly internals, and a high-refresh OLED display.

The laptop is designed for power users who demand maximum performance in a portable chassis, from its large cooling system to its accessible RAM and SSD slots.

A Thick Chassis to Accommodate Extreme Hardware

By its sheer size, the MSI Raider 16 Max HX is immediately eye-catching. The laptop is big and hefty, and it's evident that the design prioritizes cooling and performance over portability. That extra bulk exists for a reason: the system can pull up to 300W of power during demanding workloads.

Inside, MSI pairs an NVIDIA RTX 5090 Laptop GPU, rated at 175W, with Intel's flagship Core Ultra 290HX processor based on the Arrow Lake architecture. That combination places the Raider 16 Max HX at the very top end of the gaming laptop market.

The box itself keeps things simple. Alongside the laptop sits a massive 400W AC/DC power adapter using a proprietary connector. Considering how much power this machine can draw while gaming, staying plugged into the wall is practically mandatory if maximum performance is the goal. Even with its large 91.8 Wh battery, heavy gaming workloads will drain the battery quickly.

Visually, MSI keeps the design relatively stealthy. The top lid features the classic MSI Dragon logo alongside a textured dragon pattern hidden beneath the surface finish. The darker coating does attract fingerprints under direct lighting, but the understated look gives the Raider 16 Max HX a cleaner aesthetic than many aggressively styled gaming laptops.

Ports, Upgradeability, and Repair-Friendly Design

MSI includes a generous selection of ports spread across all sides of the laptop. On the right side, you have a combo audio jack and two USB-A 3.2 Gen2 connections with 10 Gbps bandwidth. The rear has 2.5GB Ethernet, HDMI 2.1, another USB-A port, and a charging connector. Placing major cables on the back helps reduce desk clutter during gaming sessions.

The underside of the Raider 16 Max HX highlights one of the laptop's strongest features: accessibility. MSI clearly emphasizes user upgrades, even printing upgrade messaging directly onto the bottom cover. Ventilation dominates the underside, while every screw uses a standard Phillips head design, making the laptop far easier to open and service than many competing systems.

At 5.73lbs, the Raider 16 Max HX is undeniably heavy. However, the dense cooling hardware and large internal heatsinks justify the added weight. MSI also avoids making the entire chassis metal, instead using a metal lid with a primarily plastic body. That approach helps manage both thermals and overall weight.

Full-Sized Keyboard and OLED Display

The keyboard setup is surprisingly complete for a 16-inch gaming laptop. MSI includes a full numpad, properly sized arrow keys, and per-key RGB lighting without sacrificing major functionality elsewhere on the layout. You might be disappointed by the lack of a right Control key, but the overall typing experience is really good.

The dedicated function shortcuts on the arrow keys let you easily switch fan profiles without loading any additional software. MSI even adds a built-in crosshair shortcut mapped to the down arrow key.

The trackpad is large enough for comfortable daily use, though the engineering sample exhibited slight rattling. MSI reportedly confirmed that retail units should improve this behavior.

Display quality is one of the Raider Max 16's strongest features. MSI equips the laptop with a 16-inch 2560x1600 OLED panel running at 240Hz with claimed 100% DCI-P3 coverage and VESA DisplayHDR True Black 1000 certification. The glossy finish can produce reflections, but the panel remains bright enough to offset most visibility concerns.

Motion clarity benefits greatly from OLED response times, while the combination of a 240Hz refresh rate and flagship hardware allows many games to actually utilize the high refresh ceiling. The display is not touch-enabled, though that decision makes sense considering the gaming-focused audience.

Gaming Performance Pushes Laptop Hardware to the Limit

Gaming performance is where the Raider 16 Max HX truly separates itself. The laptop includes a hardware MUX switch, allowing the discrete GPU to access the display directly without routing frames through the integrated graphics first. That reduces latency while improving gaming efficiency.

With MSI's Extreme Performance and Apex modes enabled, the system demonstrates enormous performance potential. Cyberpunk 2077 runs around 130fps to 135fps while simultaneously recording gameplay through OBS. Even under combined gaming and recording workloads, the Raider 16 Max HX maintains stable performance.

Ray tracing pushes performance below 60fps at maximum settings, but the fact that fully maxed ray tracing remains even partially viable on a laptop says a lot about the available GPU power.

Additional testing shows similarly impressive numbers. F1 gives you over 200fps averages, with Total War: Warhammer III being around 113fps. For gaming workloads, the Raider 16 Max HX performs like a desktop-class machine, squeezed into a small chassis.

Battery life is pretty much what you'd expect from a phone in this category. The laptop lasts about 6 hours with lighter testing, but gaming on battery life is a different story.

Cooling System Handles Massive Power Loads

Thermals remain aggressive but within expected limits for hardware operating at these wattages. The CPU package reportedly peaks near 197W during stress testing, with Cinebench averages hovering around 101°C. While those temperatures sound alarming, they remain within Intel's intended operating behavior for the Core Ultra 290HX.

GPU cooling performs substantially better. In Kombustor testing, the RTX 5090 Laptop GPU averages about 71 degrees Celsius and peaks at about 75 degrees Celsius, which is well within thermal constraints.

Opening the system reveals MSI's “Intraflow Cooler" design, featuring six large heat pipes connected to dense heatsinks and dual cooling fans. Internally, the Raider 16 Max HX also supports two standard 2280 M.2 SSDs, along with accessible SODIMM memory slots.

MSI further improves serviceability by labeling screw lengths directly on the internal frame. A separate internal switch isolates battery power before RAM or SSD upgrades, minimizing the risk of unintended electrical damage during component changes.

A Premium Gaming Laptop With Premium Pricing

The Raider 16 Max HX starts at over $3,000 in the US, with higher-end versions featuring flagship components going for around $4,100. The price positions the system squarely in enthusiast territory, but the hardware, cooling system, and upgrade-friendly design make a case for its status as a real desktop-replacement gaming laptop.
