PS5 Pro PSSR 2 Upgrade Fixes Image Quality and Unlocks Full Hardware Potential
Image quality issues that previously affected PS5 Pro have been largely resolved, enabling consistently sharp visuals across modern titles.

The latest PSSR update makes a big difference in the quality of the images and the overall experience on the PS5 Pro. It turns what seemed like a hardware-focused improvement into a more full and interesting system.
The console is now more in line with what mid-range PCs expect because it can upscale better, ray trace better, and handle 60fps modes better.

Hardware Potential Meets Better Software Execution
PS5 Pro always appeared exciting from a hardware standpoint. It combines elements from AMD’s IP portfolio with custom machine learning acceleration to deliver a much more capable system. That foundation allows it to handle ray tracing more effectively, maintain stronger 60fps modes, and reduce the image quality compromises that were common in this generation.
We can already see the benefits in titles like Assassin’s Creed Shadows, where ray tracing improvements are noticeable. Another example is recent releases like Requiem, where additional ray tracing features are being pushed even at 60fps. These improvements highlight how much headroom the hardware actually has when paired with better software.
PSSR 1 Limitations and the Need for Change
PSSR 1, however, held the system back. It often delivered mediocre image quality and struggled to compete even with analytical upscalers. In some cases, it performed worse, and when it failed, it failed badly. Issues like mangled RTGI in UE5 games made those shortcomings very visible.
We saw situations where the PS5 Pro version of a game could actually look worse than the base console. That alone made the upgrade hard to justify at times, especially when there was no option to disable PSSR.
PSSR Upgrade Changes the Game
With the upgraded PSSR, those issues are largely addressed. Image quality is now vastly improved, and importantly, it comes without any noticeable performance penalty. This is where the system starts to justify itself.
We can expect developers to take advantage of this by pushing more aggressive dynamic resolution targets. They can render at lower internal resolutions while still maintaining strong visual clarity after upscaling. That extra GPU headroom can now be used for more interesting features, including enhanced effects and better ray tracing implementations.
A More Consistent Upgrade Path
With the new version of PSSR and the possibility of system-level updates applying improvements across titles, the experience becomes more consistent. We should reach a point where playing the PS5 Pro version of a game is always an upgrade over the base console.
You will no longer need to worry about image quality regressions. Instead, the focus shifts back to the gameplay experience, where visual flaws no longer distract from immersion.
Closing the Gap with PC Technologies
The difference now starts to resemble the gap between AMD GPUs and technologies like DLSS in the PC space. Image quality has historically been a major reason why users leaned toward certain GPU solutions, and that same principle applies here.
We are not yet seeing full equivalents to advanced PC features like ray reconstruction, but the direction is clear. The upgraded PSSR brings the console much closer to that level, especially in modern, demanding titles where image quality previously suffered.

Looking Ahead to Future Innovations
There is still room to grow. Technologies like machine learning frame generation or more advanced ray tracing enhancements could eventually make their way to consoles. Even if they are limited to 30fps modes, they would still represent meaningful progress.
We are curious to see how future developments, including projects like Amethyst, evolve and whether they introduce new techniques similar to those emerging on PC. These innovations could define the next wave of console capabilities.
A Strong Step Forward for PS5 Pro
For now, the upgraded PSSR stands as a major improvement. It corrects one of the biggest weaknesses of the system and unlocks more of its hardware potential. While it would have been ideal to launch in this state, the progress made is clear.
We are likely approaching the final years of this console generation, but that does not mean progress will slow down. Developers can still push the system further, and with the improved upscaling in place, PS5 Pro is in a much better position to deliver consistently high-quality experiences.
