Since the release of Star Wars Battlefront 2 and the debut of its predatory microtransaction system, many gamers took to the internet by storm to voice their vexation towards the problem. One of the discussions that arose was whether loot boxes, in general, should be categorized as gambling? According to Belgium, it is.

"The mixing of money and addiction is gambling," Belgium's gaming commission stated.

Belgium's Minister of Justice Koen Geens also took part in the announcement. "Mixing gambling and gaming, especially at a young age, is dangerous for the mental health of the child."

Belgium hopes to take this to Europe as a whole, which can lead to a lot of problems for publishers. Loot boxes have become a widespread inclusion used in video games as part of the microtransaction system. Redefining these additions as gambling, in theory, could cost publishers millions in fines alone and put a strain on the industry since some games depend on these purchases to continue development. These include games like free-to-play titles such as League of Legends, Smite, and Hearthstone to premium games such as Overwatch.

How the rest of the world reacts to this is yet to be seen.
