Dragon's Dogma 2 has been one of those games that has remained a topic of discussion since launching in March 2024, although not always for the reasons Capcom would have preferred. The game's performance issues, bugs, and lack of clear updates quickly became a major part of the discussion surrounding it.

The RPG arrived with technical problems that quickly became a major part of the discussion, with performance issues making it difficult for many players to enjoy what was otherwise an ambitious follow-up. For a while, it even looked like Capcom might simply leave the game behind as it moved on to other projects.

That uncertainty lasted for much longer than many players expected.

While Monster Hunter Wilds was attracting plenty of attention and doing strong numbers, Dragon's Dogma 2 fans were mostly left waiting for information about major fixes, updates, or any larger plans for the game. The occasional anniversary wallpaper did little to answer those questions, leaving the community with almost nothing to work with besides hope that Capcom would eventually return to the RPG.

That hope was partly based on the history of the original Dragon's Dogma. The first game also went through a difficult period before eventually receiving its Dark Arisen expansion, which significantly expanded the experience and became an important part of the game's identity.

Because of that history, you could still find players holding onto the idea that Dragon's Dogma 2 would eventually receive a similar treatment, even when there was very little evidence that anything was actually happening. That hope remained because the original game had shown that Capcom could return to Dragon's Dogma with a substantial expansion.

Now, that patience is finally being rewarded with Dragon's Dogma 2: Dark Arisen. Just as the original Dark Arisen was an expansion on its predecessor, adding a new region, new abilities, more enemies, and other changes to improve the overall experience, so too is this expansion a major addition to the game.

The expansion is also expected to include broader improvements to the base game, which have been a major point of interest for existing players. The changes aren’t just to give you another area to explore; it seems the goal is to improve aspects of the core experience that have been criticized since launch.

The timing of the announcement made the whole situation even more surprising.

Before Dark Arisen was announced, Dragon's Dogma 2 was starting to feel almost forgotten, and the player base moved slowly from frustration into acceptance. Most players had simply accepted the fact that the game might never get the kind of large-scale support they were hoping for, instead of looking forward to a big comeback. The announcement of the expansion quickly changed that, giving the community a reason to pay attention again.

Dragon’s Dogma 2 is still about the Arisen and their fight against the giant red dragon who stole their heart at its foundation. You are pushed into a fantasy adventure where defeating that dragon becomes the central goal, but getting there is much more involved than simply following a straightforward path toward the final battle.

The world gives you plenty of room to explore, complete side activities, encounter enemies, and build your character before taking on the dragon. This gives you the freedom to shape your journey at your pace instead of constantly pushing you toward the main story. It also lets you discover new areas along the way.

One of the most significant parts of that experience remains the pawn system. You create your own Pawn early in the game, and that character stays with you throughout your journey as one of your most useful companions. You can customize your pawn, provide them with different gear, and build them around your own playstyle, making the companion feel a lot more personal than your average RPG party member.

You can also recruit pawns created by other players, allowing you to change your party depending on what you need.

Different vocations give these characters different roles, so you can adjust your group around your preferred playstyle or whatever challenge you happen to be facing. Your Pawns can also help you discover items, provide hints, assist during combat, and generally make navigating the world easier without completely taking control away from you.

That system is one of the reasons Dragon's Dogma 2 stands out from other open-world RPGs. The game gives you enough direction to understand where you need to go, but it does not constantly tell you exactly how to approach every situation. You can head in another direction, take on side missions, discover hidden areas, and find things that the game never explicitly explains to you.

Combat remains another major strength, particularly because of the game's different vocations and varied skills. Each vocation gives you another way to approach encounters, while the game's larger enemies can turn fights into much more involved battles than simply attacking an enemy until its health reaches zero.

At the same time, enemy variety was one of the game's biggest weaknesses at launch. Fighting the same groups of orcs, bandits, and wolves repeatedly could eventually become tiring, particularly when many encounters started to feel like variations of the same fight. The game did have larger and more memorable creatures, including griffins, wyverns, ghosts, giants, and the hidden Medusa encounter, but the more common enemies could make the world feel less varied than players wanted.

Dark Arisen is expected to address some of that problem by introducing additional enemies alongside its other gameplay changes. That could give you more reasons to explore the world again, especially if you already spent dozens of hours learning how the existing encounters work.

Another part of the experience that could benefit from returning players is the equipment system.

The expansion introduces a new relic system that adds to the already large selection of equipment available throughout the game. Since Dragon's Dogma has always encouraged you to explore and discover things without explaining every reward through tutorials, adding more equipment gives you another reason to search areas you may have previously overlooked.

That approach to discovery is still one of the most appealing parts of Dragon's Dogma 2. The game gives you pointers about where you should go and what you need to accomplish, but it leaves plenty of the journey open to your own decisions. You can follow the intended route, turn around and head somewhere entirely different, or spend your time working through side missions instead of immediately chasing the main objective.

For returning players, that freedom could make Dark Arisen feel like more than just another piece of downloadable content. The combination of a new region, additional enemies, new abilities, equipment, gameplay changes, and a harder mode gives you several reasons to revisit a game that many people had already written off.

Dragon's Dogma 2 has always occupied an unusual space in the RPG genre, blending Japanese design ideas with the structure of a modern Western fantasy RPG.

That combination can make the game feel different from more typical open-world adventures, especially when you factor in the Pawn system, massive monster encounters, flexible vocations, and the way the world encourages you to learn things without constantly explaining them.

After so much time in uncertainty, Dragon’s Dogma 2 is finally getting the kind of major expansion many players had been hoping for. Dark Arisen could fix many of the game's biggest problems while adding enough new content to entice both new and returning players to give the RPG another shot.

For a game that once seemed to be fading away, its next chapter could instead become the point where Dragon's Dogma 2 finally finds the experience it was always trying to deliver. It could give both new and returning players a strong reason to experience the game again.
