Prototype Remaster Rumors Gain Steam as New Radical Entertainment Revives Its Website

The Prototype franchise could be returning, with New Radical Entertainment's recent activity adding fuel to ongoing rumors of a possible remaster of the original game. The studio is well known for remastering and porting games to mobile and consoles, co-developing titles, and taking on larger development projects. Its previous work includes The Simpsons: Hit & Run, The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction, Scarface, the Crash series, and Prototype itself.

Now, it looks like the studio is working on something Prototype-related once again. While there is still no official confirmation of a new game, several pieces of information suggest the franchise may at least be getting some behind-the-scenes attention.

The latest part of the story comes from New Radical Entertainment's recently relaunched website.

The site prominently features some of the studio's older games, including Prototype and The Simpsons: Hit & Run. That alone doesn't confirm a new project, but it has added to rumors circulating for several months about a possible Prototype remaster.

There have also been screenshots shared online by an account known as Nixon. One comment suggested the sound changes when climbing a wall, potentially pointing to a new locomotion test. Another answer described it as a test of local motion. If the material is tied to Prototype, it could suggest that some movement systems in the game are being worked on, rather than left untouched.

The report says the idea is closer to what was done with the remaster of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, where the original game is still the basis, but gets a significant visual and technical upgrade using Unreal Engine 5. That would mean Prototype could keep its original gameplay and structure and get modernized, not rebuilt from the ground up.

Another report earlier was speculation from April 2025. According to a user on Reddit, 'Bigby,' during a recent study group session, he revealed information about a new game, a new Prototype game.

Rumors suggest Alex Mercer could return as the main character, with gameplay that reportedly includes his classic shape-shifting powers and the ability to morph into other people to sneak into different areas. The game was also said to be set in New York City, returning the series to the setting of its original games.

However, the details were not actually obtained through a traditional playtest. Insider Gaming contacted Bigby about the claims, and the user explained that they had participated in a Yuggov survey. They said the survey asked them to sign an NDA and asked about a series of features that games on the horizon could have and how appealing those features were to them.

Bigby clarified that it was not a playtest, but the survey apparently described features that were already planned for upcoming games. Insider Gaming also noted that it had not been able to fully verify the claims, although the information was considered notable enough to report.

Conflicting reports have emerged since then.

In January 2026, there were no plans for the Prototype IP, and it was suggested that anyone claiming otherwise was misinformed. Discussion on the Prototype subreddit also brought up a credit update that some users interpreted as a possible sign that something was happening with the franchise.

Those reports indicated that XBOX and Activision had no intention of continuing Prototype at the time. However, a modder later disputed the idea that nothing was happening, pointing to what they described as at least one new version of Prototype that had been worked on.

The modder reportedly identified the change as a credit update and a recompiled executable. The argument was that this kind of update would not normally happen accidentally. That still does not establish that Prototype 3 or a full remake is coming, but it has helped keep the possibility of some kind of remaster or updated version alive.

Another major part of the speculation involves The Simpsons: Hit & Run.

VGC's Jordan Middler reportedly said Activision is looking to bring back some of its older licensed games, including The Simpsons: Hit & Run. That lines up with New Radical Entertainment putting the game prominently on its newly relaunched website.

The wider strategy could also explain why Prototype is suddenly being discussed again. Activision has a large collection of older franchises, while XBOX has been looking at ways to bring more of its existing properties back into the spotlight. Under Asha Sharma's leadership as XBOX CEO, the company has also been undergoing broader changes, including an organizational restructuring.

If Activision is genuinely looking to revive more older and licensed properties, New Radical Entertainment would be a natural studio to involve given its history with several of those franchises. That makes the appearance of Prototype and The Simpsons: Hit & Run on its website more interesting, even if neither title has been officially announced.

For now, the available information does not confirm that a full Prototype remake is in development.

There is also nothing concrete confirming Prototype 3. The more realistic possibility suggested by the current rumors is a remaster or some other significantly updated version of one of the existing games.

That would also fit with the kind of work New Radical Entertainment has experience with. Rather than completely rebuilding Prototype, a remaster could modernize its visuals, movement, performance, and other technical elements while preserving the core game.

Prototype remains one of the more recognizable older properties in XBOX's library, and both Prototype and Prototype 2 built a strong following around Alex Mercer's shape-shifting abilities and the series' open-world design.

A modernized version could therefore bring the games to current consoles while giving the franchise another opportunity to return to the spotlight.

The timing is also notable because there have been separate rumors about PlayStation potentially bringing back inFAMOUS. Both franchises occupy a similar space, with superpowered open-world gameplay built around characters who can move through cities while using abilities that go far beyond ordinary combat.

For now, though, the evidence around Prototype remains a collection of rumors, reports, website activity, and community discoveries rather than an official announcement. The strongest suggestion is that something related to the franchise could be under consideration, with a substantial remaster appearing more plausible than a completely rebuilt remake based on the information currently available.

New Radical Entertainment's return has certainly put Prototype back into the conversation, especially with the original game appearing alongside the studio's other notable properties. Until Activision or XBOX officially reveals what the studio is working on, however, the exact nature of the Prototype project remains unclear.
