Rollercoaster Tycoon: The Movie?
News by Craig Bryan on May 14, 2010
"'Rollercoaster Tycoon' riding to the screen for Sony Pictures Animation."
This has to be one of the more bizarre news stories to emerge in recent weeks. Sony, the guys behind three of the most successful gaming consoles of all time have taken the rights for Rollercoaster Tycoon in an attempt to make an animation-based movie around the popular theme park simulator.
With so many great, story-driven games emerging from Sony over the last few years we fully expected to hear announcements for a God of War movie, or a Metal Gear Solid movie, or even Uncharted – the current Game of the Year. But no, they choose to buy the rights for a relatively slow-paced management simulator, which is very much an introverted and individual experience.
Harald Zwart is taking on the challenge of the big-screen adaptation as an executive producer and possibly even director. Zwart’s biggest grossing movie to date is Pink Panther 2, and he is currently also working on a remake of The Karate Kid, starring Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith.
The Rollercoaster Tycoon series has generated more than $300 million in sales over the years, and become the third-highest-selling of all time in the US. Stay posted for future updates and be sure to give your opinion on this story via our current home page poll.
