Stellar Blade Not Finished Yet as Shift Up Teases More Updates Ahead of the Switch 2 Release

Stellar Blade continues to receive attention two and a half years after launch, with more updates potentially planned alongside its Nintendo Switch 2 release and Rayman Legends Retold arriving in December.

Stellar Blade may have launched more than two years ago, but Shift Up still appears to be supporting the game. With the Nintendo Switch 2 version approaching and additional content already announced, the studio has now suggested that more changes could still be coming to the original game.

Director Kim Hyung-tae said Stellar Blade isn't complete from the team’s perspective, suggesting that more updates could still be on the way even as development continues on the sequel, Stellar Blade: Blood Rain. The exact nature of these potential changes has not been confirmed, but the comments suggest Shift Up still has plans for the original game.

The comments are particularly revealing because it initially seemed like the original Stellar Blade was entering its final stage of support.

The Switch 2 release and upcoming Bayonetta-related free DLC seemed like the next major additions before the team shifted its attention to Blood Rain. Instead, Kim’s comments suggest that Shift Up still has plans for the original game and wants to continue supporting players who are still enjoying it.

According to the director, the team wants to do whatever it can for people who are playing Stellar Blade. He also suggested that the game itself could undergo additional changes by the time the sequel arrives. The exact meaning of those comments remains unclear, particularly because some of the statements were translated, but they do indicate that Shift Up is considering further work on the original game rather than treating it as a finished product.

That could potentially mean more content, improvements, or other changes, although the available information does not confirm exactly what the studio has planned. Stellar Blade has already received several substantial updates since its original release, including crossover content and other additions that have kept the game in the conversation long after its launch.

The timing also makes sense because the Nintendo Switch 2 version gives Shift Up another opportunity to bring attention back to Stellar Blade. The game has already appeared on PlayStation 5 and PC, but its arrival on Nintendo’s newer hardware introduces it to another audience.

The upcoming Bayonetta content is another example of that approach. The free DLC gives existing players another reason to return to Stellar Blade, while the Switch 2 version brings the game to a new platform. If Shift Up does decide to add more content after that, the existing player base could provide a strong foundation for continued support.

Stellar Blade has already benefited from a steady stream of updates rather than receiving everything at once.

Shift Up is not one of the industry’s largest development teams, and the studio has had several projects competing for resources. It has worked on the PC version, the Nintendo Switch 2 port, the NieR: Automata DLC, the NIKKE collaboration, and the upcoming Stellar Blade: Blood Rain.

Despite that workload, Stellar Blade has continued appearing in the gaming conversation. That is notable for a single-player game that launched roughly two and a half years ago. Many games receive major content updates in the first few months after release, then gradually disappear from the discussion, but Stellar Blade has maintained attention through new releases, collaborations, and platform expansions.

The Switch 2 version could extend that lifespan even further. Players who already own Stellar Blade on PlayStation 5 or PC may have another reason to buy it if they want to experience it on Nintendo hardware. Continued support also means players returning to the game aren't necessarily returning to the exact experience that launched in 2024.

Shift Up has also responded directly to feedback surrounding the Nintendo Switch 2 version. The official Stellar Blade account confirmed that the team monitored feedback from players who tried the Complete Edition demo and decided to add a frame generation toggle to the final release.

The addition is significant because frame generation can produce different results depending on the game and the player’s preferences. Rather than forcing the feature on everyone, Shift Up is giving players control over whether they want to use it. That means players can decide whether they prefer the visual and performance characteristics of frame generation or would rather play without it.

The decision also reflects a broader pattern with the studio’s handling of Stellar Blade.

Shift Up has shown a willingness to respond to feedback and make changes based on how players are using the game. The frame generation toggle is a relatively small feature compared with an entirely new expansion, but it demonstrates that the Switch 2 release is still being adjusted based on player feedback before launch.

While Stellar Blade remains the biggest part of these updates, another older franchise is also preparing for a new release. Rayman Legends Retold is scheduled to launch on December 3, bringing Ubisoft’s acclaimed platformer back with updated visuals, new content, and additional gameplay features.

Rayman Legends Retold isn't simply a straightforward re-release. The new version adds content and narrative changes, including a mysterious villain who spreads corruption across the Glade of Dreams. Players will once again take control of Rayman and his friends as they move through a side-scrolling adventure built around platforming, combat, and exploration.

The game will also support up to four-player local co-op, letting players experience the adventure together. Returning platforming mechanics include jumping, gliding, and punching through different environments, while the game adds new elements alongside familiar content from the original game.

Music stages are also returning, and players must synchronize their movement with the rhythm of the music. Four new musical stages join these sections, giving returning players extra content even if they already know the original game. These new stages should also give longtime fans another reason to revisit the platformer and experience its updated presentation.

Rayman Legends Retold is also expanding the game’s selection of environments.

Iconic levels from the original release are returning alongside a new six-realm area, while other additions include dragon-riding sections and the Cave of Trials. The updated release will also feature expanded voice cinematics and a larger soundtrack. These additions are designed to give both returning players and newcomers more content to experience beyond the original campaign.

The game is priced at $39.99, putting it below the price of many new full releases. That could make the updated version easier to approach for players who enjoyed Rayman Legends and for newcomers who have never experienced it. The lower price also gives returning players an opportunity to revisit the game without paying the full price of a new release.

Rayman Legends Retold was previously expected to arrive earlier, but its release was pushed to December 3. The new date places it in an extremely busy period for major games, although the release is still positioned as a relatively accessible platforming experience rather than another massive open-world title.

For Stellar Blade, however, the more important story is that Shift Up appears to have no immediate plans to completely move away from the original game. The developer is preparing the Switch 2 version, continuing to support existing players, and developing Blood Rain, while Kim Hyung-tae’s comments suggest further changes to the original game could still happen.

Exactly what those changes will involve remains unknown. The studio has not confirmed another major expansion or detailed a specific roadmap beyond the content already announced. Still, the combination of the Switch 2 release, free DLC, ongoing collaborations, and continued developer support gives Stellar Blade another opportunity to remain relevant well beyond its original launch.

For a new single-player IP, maintaining this level of attention for two and a half years is notable. Stellar Blade has continued to receive updates while expanding to new platforms, and the latest comments suggest Shift Up isn't ready to consider the game completely finished yet. With Blood Rain also in development, the franchise's future appears to involve both the original game and its upcoming sequel rather than an immediate transition away from Eve’s first adventure.
