Wuchang: Fallen Feathers' "Phantom Update" Leaves Fans Waiting

The deluxe expansion teased for September is still MIA, but here's the scoop on what's coming and what might be delaying it.

Hey there, folks, if you've been refreshing Steam or checking your console like a madman over the past week, you're not alone. On September 17, a bunch of news outlets announced that Wuchang: Fallen Feathers had received a brand-new update, including a deluxe edition expansion. Well, there's a catch—players quickly realized there was nothing to actually download.

Steam, Xbox, and PlayStation were all silent, and it wasn't long before some of those announcements started disappearing from the internet. Even Reddit posts about the update have been removed here and there. Let's put our tinfoil hats on and investigate.

After some digging, I've pieced together what's happening with this update and what we can expect moving forward. Officially, developer Lenzee and publisher 505 Games launched the first deluxe edition expansion for Wuchang: Fallen Feathers. According to the announcement, it's live on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and for PC on Steam, Epic Games Store, and Windows Store. The expansion promises new content, some free cosmetics, and a gameplay patch.

The deluxe expansion reportedly adds two new costumes, Forged Iron and Radiant, as well as two new weapons: the Hooked Blade Spear and Blazing Nightlotus. The idea is that these items will expand combat options and give players more freedom. Lenzee also confirmed that another two costumes and two weapons will drop later in 2025, good news for you if you happen to own the deluxe.

Beyond the deluxe content, all players were supposed to receive two free headgear pieces: the Bo Sorcerer's Crown and the Ming Army Helmet. Once installed, these cosmetics would unlock automatically.

So, what's the deal? Why can't anyone see the update? Reddit user Jamie241190 helped shed some light on the situation. They noticed that websites and even Google search results mentioned the new deluxe content as of September 17, but by the next day, there were no screenshots or updates to be found, especially on PS5. Jamie even reached out to 505 Games, and the response was that the update is "unofficial at the moment."

At this point, it's pretty safe to say that, for one reason or another, the patch has been pulled. Whether it was a last-minute technical issue or miscommunication with the media, we don't know. An insider shows that both the deluxe upgrade and expansion packs were updated just two days ago, which suggests Lenzee had everything ready but held back on pulling the trigger.

505 Games hasn't released any further updates, and the Wuchang: Fallen Feathers Discord is quiet, too. They have stated that the update has been delayed, which means there's no official word on when it will actually drop. For context, the last major Wuchang: Fallen Feathers update hit on August 22. Since then, aside from this "Phantom Update," there's been radio silence from the devs.

Beyond what we discussed about weapons and cosmetics, details are murky. A video that surfaced prior to some articles being pulled hinted at a bunch of changes, though it may have been AI-generated.

According to the info circulating online, the Forged Iron costume has a heavy, rugged look inspired by Ming Dynasty battle commanders, complete with a unique idle animation and a slightly different dodge animation. The Radiant costume is said to feature robes embroidered with golden jade green patterns inspired by imperial ceremonial garments. This means earlier claims about Shadow Plum and Lotus Mist were not right.

For weapons, the Hook Blade Spear is described as a polearm with a serrated tip for sweeping crowd-control strikes. It has a hook-and-pull mechanic that allows you to drag certain enemies closer. The Blazing Nightlotus is a curved blade infused with fire talismans, where both light and heavy attacks build up a burn meter that literally sets enemies on fire over time. Its heavy finisher supposedly creates a full flame burst around you when equipped.

Skill upgrades include a unique talisman called Feather of Insight, which grants a late-game skill tree unlock but can only be used once per playthrough. The Bo Sorcerer's Crown provides a small focus recovery boost, while the Ming Army Helmet is a historically inspired piece of armor with no useful perks.

Combat improvements mentioned include adjustments to Twin Sabers' stamina usage to encourage longer combos, smoother transition frames for Hellbirds' attacks, and rebalanced boss stagger values so that you don't have to be pitch-perfect to take them down. Enemy AI pathing in tight spaces has been tweaked to reduce clipping, and groups of enemies now spawn more naturally.

Exploration and lore updates reportedly include new storytelling elements tied to the Hook Blade Spear and Blazing Nightlotus, along with hidden places that make you want to revisit mid-game areas with new abilities. Technical improvements were supposed to cover smoother texture streaming and HDR fixes on PS5.

There were changes to the UI and menus that included the ability to organize inventory to put freshly acquired luxury items at the top and a toggle for outfit previews at campfires. Performance adjustments fixed memory leaks that might crash the game and made frame pacing better on PC when the frame rate was higher than 120 FPS.

Looking ahead, the roadmap suggests that later this year, we should expect another update with two more sets of armor and weapons, side quests exploring the Phoenix Cult, and changes to New Game Plus.

Most of the leaked or AI-generated information seems consistent with other findings. An insider has reportedly uncovered a chain-like weapon in the game files, which fits with the updates teased for later this year. So there is reason to believe these additions are coming.

In the meantime, we, the Wuchang: Fallen Feathers community, will have to be patient. The update was clearly in development and even documented in some sources, but something happened that only God, Lenzee, and 505 Games know, which led them to pull out (a strong pullout game, I must add). Until 505 Games gives us an official date, all we can do is speculate; well, that's what our job is.

At the end of the day, it's frustrating but not unusual in the world of gaming. Sometimes patches are pulled for last-minute fixes, and this looks like one of those cases. Wuchang fans should keep an eye on official channels but also brace themselves for a bit of a wait.
