Obtaining a Tanto is essential to unlock multi-target takedowns early in Assassin’s Creed: Shadows. This specialized weapon enables multiple takedowns—but only when paired with the appropriate skill from the skill tree. To make the most of it, ensure you unlock both the weapon and the required ability.
Here is a guide showing the steps to find Tanto early in Assassin's Creed Shadows:
Where to Find a Tanto Early in the Game
While smaller loot chests in the game can contain weapons, their contents are mostly randomized, making them unreliable sources for a Tanto early on. The most consistent method is to purchase one directly from a weapon merchant. Fortunately, a Tanto is typically available from merchants throughout the map, and there's one accessible very early in the game.
During the game’s introduction, you’ll go through a relatively linear opening sequence that lasts a few hours. Stay on course with the main storyline until you unlock access to your hideout, which marks the beginning of true open-world exploration.
Once this stage is reached, many early quests will lead you to the Izumi Setsu region. Here, your first major destination is Sakai, the game’s first significant town, where you can reliably find your first Tanto.
How to Purchase the Tanto
In Sakai, find the weapons merchant, who usually offers a Tanto for sale. You'll find the price is quite reasonable, and if you ever need a little extra cash, you can easily sell any gear you no longer need.
However, be selective with what you sell. Later in the game, after building the forge at your base, you'll unlock the ability to dismantle weapons, yielding valuable upgrade materials. Consider keeping a few spare items instead of selling everything to prepare for this.
Bonus Tip:
While inside the Sakai, be sure to check nearby boats where you can find a legendary sword. It is a powerful weapon that can be found early. It will boost your combat capabilities. So, be sure to check that out.
Getting a tanto in Assassin’s Creed Shadows early will enhance your combat, making the early missions much smoother.
