Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss Guide | Mei's House Portal Puzzle Solution

How to open the basement portal in the right order without getting stuck on the ritual wall

The portal puzzle in Mei's House is the first part of Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss that can make the game seem harder than it is. It's easy to see why. It isn't one puzzle.

There are a few small puzzles that unlock each other one after the other. You gather papers, figure out how to arrange a wall, learn how sonar works, look for the right stones, and then finish the mechanism downstairs. The whole chapter becomes much easier to control once you see that structure.

Start with the papers, but do it in the right order

The first thing to do is to collect all the papers that are spread out around the house. The best way to do it is to get four of them first and leave the fifth one, the one next to the ritual wall, until last.

This is important because your inventory space is limited in this sequence, and picking them up at the wrong time can make the wall look messy. When you have four documents, go back to the ritual wall and match them up by the curved edges on each page. After that, get the last document and put it in the last open space.

Set off sonar before looking for the stones

Don't just run straight into the basement after the wall is done. First, look at the crystal-like stone on the desk in the room across from the wall. That interaction starts the sonar tutorial and gives the next step a clear direction.

Open the sonar interface, load the new data, and pulse the area. The pulse isn't meant to show you every object you need for all time. It is supposed to make the room smaller for things that share that exact frequency.

Ignore the noise and find the two right stones

A lot of players waste time here. The scan will show a lot of things that match, but only two stones are important for the portal sequence. One is hidden near the bed's pillow, which is close to the ritual wall.

The other one is on a shelf in the bedroom. Using the shapes that show up on the finished wall as a guide is the best way to stay focused. You are not getting every mineral in the house. You are putting two specific silhouettes in two specific sockets.

The last step is to go downstairs after you have both stones. Go to the basement wall that is covered in the dark substance, find the sockets, and put the stones in the right places.

The barrier breaks and the portal opens when both are sitting down correctly. If the puzzle still won't move forward, the basement is probably not the problem. Most of the time, it's a missed step upstairs, like the wall order or the sonar setup.

Mistakes that people make a lot that waste time

The worst thing you can do is think of the ritual wall, the sonar tutorial, and the basement as three different mysteries. They are all part of the same chain.

Another common mistake is scanning without first loading the right crystal frequency. A third is picking up stones before the wall clearly shows you which shapes are important. The puzzle gets a lot clearer when you only do the next step after the one before it is completely solved.

If you do it in the right order, the portal puzzle is a great way to start the game. In one sequence, it teaches document logic, how to arrange objects, how to filter sonar, and how to place things at the end. That's why solving it cleanly makes the rest of the investigation seem a lot easier.
