You will learn how to handle Feral Monsters, restore local habitats, and track down Endangered Species. Learning these rules is the best way to find Rare Monster Eggs and build a powerful team of Monsties.

Feral Monsters and the Backlash Effect

You will come across Feral Monsters as you travel. The land is being affected by the Crystal Encroachment, which makes these creatures more dangerous than usual. These creatures can be identified by the Blightstones or crystallized body parts that are on their bodies.

These creatures use a Non-Standard Element instead of their usual one. Their Feral Attacks hit hard, so you should focus on breaking those Blightstones. Doing this makes their special moves much weaker.

You have to watch out for Backlash. This mechanic makes the monster's crystal armor reflect damage back at you as a counterattack. These monsters swap between two different states. In one state, hitting the crystal hurts you, but in the other, it is safe.

Every species handles this differently. You need to use trial and error to figure out the timing. If you get stuck, check the Status Screen to see which state the monster is currently in.

Habitat Restoration and Ecosystem Rank

When you win a fight against a Feral Monster, you can set up a Camp in that Zone. Since every Region has several Zones, you can unlock multiple Camps.

These spots let you start Habitat Restoration. To do this, you release Monsties back into the wild. This raises the Ecosystem Rank of that specific species in the area.

Once a monster has a high Ecosystem Rank, you can start finding its Eggs in that Zone. Reaching S-Rank leads to Eggs with better Genes and Skills. Monsties also pick up Egg Powers from the main Region.

Every Zone is tied to a specific Element. High-ranking monsters often become Dual-Element Monsties. For example, a Tobi-Kadachi in a fire area might turn red and gain fire powers. This gives them a new color and makes their attacks of that element much stronger.

Endangered Species and Rare Mutations

Habitat Restoration is also how you unlock Mutations like Dreadqueen Rathian. These mostly happen with Endangered Species. To get an Endangered Species Egg, you have to deal with Invasive Monsters like the Invasive Yian Garuga.

These encounters are more like puzzles than normal fights. You can't just win by being strong; you have to find the right trick to beat them. If you make an Invasive Monster retreat, you unlock an Endangered Den that holds a special Egg you can't find anywhere else.

Many Endangered Species have hidden Mutations. These are extra Monsties, like Deviants, that only show up once you hit a certain Ecosystem Rank in the Zone.

Sometimes, you even need to have several poisonous or powerful monsters at a high Rank at the same time to trigger the mutation.

Exploring Monster Dens for Eggs

Maps have Monster Dens that change every time you visit. Common Dens look like grey rocks, while Super Rare Monster Dens look like platinum or blue rocks. The rarer the Den, the better the Eggs inside. Every Den has a Nest and items to collect.

Sometimes a monster is already there sleeping. Other times, one will walk in while you are searching. You can keep looking through the pile until the monster notices you and starts a chase.

Keep an eye out for Double Nest Dens. These are great because they hold a lot of Eggs, giving you more choices.

Every Nest you find lets you take one Egg. The monster will Retreat if you win a normal fight. This makes a Retreat Den (shown by a green icon) that only has Eggs for that monster.
