This year, we've seen numerous amazing handhelds, but the ONEXPLAYER Apex might be the best of them all. This device has an 8-inch display with a variable refresh rate, a silent liquid cooling system, and is powered by the AMD Ryzen AI Max Plus 395. It looks like it will be one of the most powerful portable gaming systems ever produced.

The Apex will use an 8-inch native landscape 120Hz VRR display, which is probably the same panel that is used in the MSI Claw 8i, Legion Go S, and AOK Zoey A1X. The IPS display isn't an OLED screen, but it has great picture quality and can purportedly show 100% of the sRGB color gamut and up to 500 nits of brightness.

While an OLED option would elevate the visuals even further, it would also push the price higher. Still, the larger 8-inch screen provides an immersive gaming experience, especially compared to the smaller 7-inch options seen in other handhelds.

Powerful Hardware

AMD Ryzen AI Max Plus 395 is the most powerful part of the Apex. It has 16 cores and 32 threads, while the Radeon 8060SI GPU has 40 compute units. This combo gives you performance that is similar to that of a laptop-grade RTX 4060, but in a portable size factor.

That means you can play recent AAA games at 1080p while your battery is running. When docked, the Apex can deliver up to 1440p gaming performance, fully utilizing its high wattage capabilities.

The Apex is said to support power levels of up to 120W, which will likely be reserved for docked usage. On battery, even with an estimated 80Wh capacity, we can expect limited runtime at full power.

However, the Max Plus 395 doesn't need to operate at maximum wattage to deliver solid performance, ensuring smoother efficiency during handheld sessions.

Cooling System Innovation

The Apex's silent liquid cooling technology is one of the most fascinating things about it. ONEXPLAYER is using a unique method for cooling mobile devices that doesn't involve vapor chambers, unlike other handhelds.

The precise battery capacity hasn't been confirmed yet, however it's thought to be approximately 80Wh or maybe 72.7Wh, which is the same as the AOK Zoey A1X battery arrangement. There's also hope for a 99Wh variant—the TSA limit for air travel—which would maximize runtime for such a powerful device.

On the audio side, the Apex will feature Harman-tuned dual stereo speakers, promising rich and balanced sound for gaming and media playback.

Controls and Build

The Apex introduces adjustable multi-stage triggers, giving users control over trigger resistance. This personalization gives the game a professional-level feel, whether you want a rapid hair-trigger response or a complete linear pull. It's evident that ONEXPLAYER wants to make the Apex not just strong but also comfortable to use.
