In Returnal, each cycle sends you back to the starting point, and the biome shifts into a new layout. Dying is part of the loop, but some runs can end at moments when you need one more attempt. In those cases, securing an extra life becomes useful. You gain this by getting a memento connected to the house events in the early area.

Locating House in Overgrown Ruins

As you move through the Overgrown Ruins, you encounter a ranch-style house. Entry is not available at first. You must get the House Key, which appears somewhere within the biome. After picking up the key, return to the house and complete the sequence inside. When the event ends, you reappear outside in Returnal.

Claiming Astronaut Figurine

Once you are back outside, an item will be next to you. In the Overgrown Ruins, this item is an Astronaut Figurine. Picking it up grants you an extra life. The game does not explain this directly, but after you collect it, the item activates when you fall in combat, bringing you back into the fight.

Using Extra Life Effectively

You may want to leave the figurine until you are ready for a boss encounter. The effect is most useful during these fights, giving you one more attempt if you are defeated in Returnal.

Purchasing the Astronaut Figurine

You can also get the figurine through the in-game store found in the Overgrown Ruins. The store appears as a half-circle of fabricators. Interact with the station to view what is for sale. An Astronaut Figurine may appear in the list, and when it does, it usually costs between 300 and 350 Obolites.
