Returnal Guide | How to Get Crimson Key

Here's a guide to getting the Crimson Key in Returnal.

Locating the Crimson Key is required to progress through Returnal. You will encounter a gate in the Overgrown Ruins that reacts to this key, but the game does not immediately explain where the key actually is or how to get it.

Crimson Key Location

You find the Crimson Key in the Overgrown Ruins, but it does not appear in an ordinary chamber. The key only becomes available in the arena where you face Phrike, the first boss of the biome. You might see the gate associated with the key before you ever reach this boss, but you cannot retrieve the key beforehand.

Defeating Phrike

There is no method to enter the boss arena, take the Crimson Key, and exit without fighting Phrike. The key is tied directly to the boss encounter. After you defeat Phrike, the key appears at the location where the boss falls. You then pick up the Crimson Key and carry it back to the previously discovered gate tied to this item in Returnal.

Using Crimson Key

Once you return to the gate with the Crimson Key, you learn that it is not a standard locked gate. Instead, it is an inactive portal. When you approach it while holding the key, the portal powers on and transforms into a connection leading to the next biome.

After this activation, the Crimson Key is removed from your inventory. The portal stays active for all future attempts, even if you die afterward in Returnal.

If you collect the Crimson Key and die before reaching the portal, you must return to the Phrike arena to retrieve it again. The boss does not respawn after being defeated, but the key reappears in the arena for you to pick up.
