Handheld gaming PCs have come a long way. They are now small devices that can run demanding AAA games and have the same flexibility as a complete desktop operating system. ROG Xbox Ally X is a Windows-based alternative to regular consoles and other handheld PCs.

It promises high performance, support for a wide range of launchers, and the same level of customization as a console in a portable physical form.

Why Get a Windows 11 Handheld

We picked the Ally X over a Steam Deck or a Nintendo Switch since it has Windows 11. That lets you use all of the game launchers, such as Xbox, Steam, Epic Games, and more. You can also play games with anti-cheat mechanisms on Windows that aren't available on some other handheld platforms. These include Call of Duty, Battlefield 6, and Rainbow Six Siege.

At first, we weren't sure if a gadget that looks like a gamepad with a 7-inch touchscreen could work well or make games look bad. Ally X works well for gaming after three months of use. It can play hard AAA games without dropping frames, and the controls feel intuitive. The grip is pleasant, and the way the buttons and joystick are laid out makes sense.

Frame Rates and Gaming Performance

Warhammer Space Marine 2 was one of the most popular games during this time. During the campaign, frame rates stayed above 60fps, even on big areas with lots of adversaries and explosions. In multiplayer, where there are fewer enemies and smaller terrain, the frame rate was between 90 and 120 fps.

You may think that playing against people on full-size gaming PCs would give you an edge, but that wasn't the case. Instead of sitting at a desk, we could play from a bed or couch, which made us less tired and helped us concentrate better. The built-in gyroscope became a favorite feature because it let you aim by moving the gadget instead of just using joysticks. That introduced a new way to control the game that felt responsive while playing against other people.

Fallout 4 and Borderlands 2, which are older games, also ran at high frame rates. In Borderlands 2, the frame rate held above 120fps, even during boss encounters that used a lot of graphics. When connected to a TV, the Ally X also worked well as a console. It worked like a regular gaming PC when it was connected to a monitor with a keyboard and mouse.

The mix of portability and performance transforms how you play games. You don't have to pick between playing high-quality games and sitting at your workstation anymore. The device lets you play games across varied settings while keeping graphics clear and frame rates steady.

Storage and Hardware Specifications

Ally X's hardware makes the system load quickly and respond quickly. In multiplayer games, the loading windows often finish before the other players' do, indicating that the SSD's speed is very high. The system comes with 1TB of storage, which is needed because certain new games use up a lot of space. Just Call of Duty may take up about 400GB of space.

The tablet also has 24GB of RAM, which lets you do more than one thing at once and keeps newer games running smoothly. That much RAM means you won't have to update right away, and it will last longer.

Sound quality is another utilitarian feature. The built-in speakers sound good, and the screen is bigger than a smartphone's, which makes it easy to watch movies, listen to music, and listen to podcasts.

Technology for Displays and Screens

Ally X has a 7-inch IPS touchscreen instead of an OLED one. Many people complain that there are no OLED panels, even though IPS panels have their own benefits. The screen is clear and bright, and it refreshes at 120Hz. The panel's high peak brightness makes it well-suited for outdoor use, and it doesn't suffer from burn-in problems common to OLED technology.

The colors are true to life, and the response time is good for fast-paced games. The most important hardware change would be to reduce the bezels. If the bezels were thinner, the display might be about 10% bigger in the same space.

Concerns about the Quality of the Build

There is still a problem with the build quality. Some users reported problems with speakers that made noise, SD card readers that overheated, gyroscopes that didn't work, and joysticks or buttons that cracked. We didn't have similar problems, though the chassis feels flexible. The plastic back cover can bend when you press on it lightly, and the grip area can make noise when you use it.

Engraved patterns, LED rings, textured grips, and elaborate cutouts are all design features that give the product its own look. But the structural rigidity doesn't fully match the internal performance capabilities. The hardware would work better with a more robust chassis.

Packaging and Accessories

The box has the device, a charger, and a cardboard stand for a desk. There is no carry case. A portable gaming PC isn't as convenient without a carry case. You have to buy the approved carry case separately, and it's often out of stock.

The cardboard stand that comes with it works in desktop mode, since it lets you access the USB ports. But it isn't strong enough to travel with. A molded rubber or silicone stand might last longer without adding much to the cost.

The bundled charger has a fixed USB-C wire that connects to the adaptor and needs its own power line. A detachable USB-C cable would make it easier to carry and manage cables. Many people may want third-party compact adapters that don't require a cord.

Problems with Windows 11 and Software

The biggest problem is still the software. Updates to Windows 11 can make things not work well. Sometimes, updates made USB ports stop working for a short time, so charging couldn't happen during those periods. That meant that updates couldn't finish since the battery was dying.

Another problem was that the device kept restarting instead of booting normally after upgrades, causing repair loops. Sometimes sleep mode didn't wake the device, so I had to force a reset by holding the power button down for a long time.

When you look at the Ally X, keep in mind that most stability problems come from the operating system, not the hardware. The internal parts work well together, but Windows 11 can make things unstable when it has to upgrade.

Final Thoughts

We saw that the ROG Xbox Ally X is a great game console that fits in a small space after three months of use. It has a 120Hz IPS screen, 1TB of storage, and 24GB of RAM, so it can run both new and old games. You can use it on both computers and game devices, and it gives you full access to Windows and a lot of game launchers.
