In 2026, the mobile games market will be more competitive, with many devices offering distinct merits. People are making decisions about what to buy based on factors like hardware performance, operating systems, price changes, and parts shortages.

Going back to Monster Hunter on the ROG Ally X

We just got Monster Hunter Wilds for the ROG Ally X and were thrilled to start playing. It was nice to go back to the Monster Hunter series after playing Monster Hunter World on PS5 a long time ago. Having both devices made it easy for us to see how each one works in everyday life and which one you should consider based on your needs.

Power and Performance

People have been talking a lot about the Steam Deck in 2026 because it's old. There are now many choices, and the Xbox ROG Ally X looks like the best one on paper. The first thing we noticed when we started playing on the Ally X was how powerful it was. So far, we haven't found a single game that doesn't work well on this device. That speaks a lot for something this small.

It still amazes us after all this time. It's impressive what kind of graphics and performance a gadget like this can get. Ally X can handle AAA and other power-hungry games.

SteamOS vs. Windows Experience

That much power costs something, and that something is Windows. At first, we didn't completely get the Windows arguments or how much more trouble it can cause than SteamOS. Not everything is a game-breaker, but Ally X takes longer to do things.

If you want to play for 10 minutes, sleep mode is a problem. There is a sleep mode; however, it doesn't always work. There have been times when a game crashes after sleeping, and you lose your progress. It doesn't happen all the time, but it happens often enough to be clear. That's why we sometimes want to find a save point, save, and quit instead of using sleep mode.

There may not be a problem with the Xbox. There is a problem with Windows. Some features just stop working for no reason. People usually say that this is just how Windows works and that you have to cope with it.

Steam Deck, on the other hand, is weaker but does what it does well. While we're cooking, traveling, or taking a break from work, we can open a game. The game is right where you left it when you pick it up again. I value your time more because it is always the same. Steam Deck is the safer choice for short sessions.

Compatibility with Games and Anti-cheat

Ally X has better hardware, which improves performance in some games. Windows is also preferable for multiplayer games that need anti-cheat technology. If that's the case, you might prefer the Ally X, since the Steam Deck doesn't always meet those needs.

Switching between the two gadgets shows that each has its own uses.

Prices and the State of the Market

Xbox ROG Ally X costs $1,000 at the time of this conversation. The RAM constraint caused by AI demand has had a significant impact on the Steam Deck OLED, which in turn has affected prices. Valve's website no longer has it in stock; thus, the only place to get it is from a third-party seller, who usually charges more.

The 512GB OLED version is now going for about $800, which is the best price we've found. Normally, it would be easier to propose the Steam Deck. It would even be higher on the list of recommendations than the Nintendo Switch 2. But the price changes the situation.

You can purchase the most powerful handheld on the market for an extra $200. Windows bloatware, useless pre-installed apps, and controller responsiveness issues sometimes don't stop the Ally X from performing well enough to justify its price right now.

Updates, Bloatware, and how Quickly things Respond

Ally X needs many modifications to work well. Some of the pre-installed apps don't make sense for a portable device. After sleeping, games can sometimes stop working. You might have to wait for the system to catch up, or the controller might not reply right away.

Even so, the ergonomics are good, and the performance remains consistent even in tough situations. Ally X is what you need if you want sheer power and AAA performance.

Comfort and Ergonomics

Both devices are quite comfortable to use. People choose based on their hand size and how they play. We prefer the Ally X for comfort, though both are at the top of the list for portable design. There is a difference, but it's not big enough to matter.

Final Thoughts

The RAM shortage is likely to improve over time, but it's not clear how it will affect the short term. With projects like the Steam Machine on the horizon, how components are distributed could have an even bigger impact on supply.

If prices stay the same, the Xbox ROG Ally X is the best choice. Given how the market is right now, it's hard to recommend the Steam Deck OLED at high prices. If the shortage worsens for both devices, waiting is the best option.

If I had to choose only one gadget, I would still choose the Steam Deck, since its operating system is stable and reliable. But if I only look at current market prices and the hardware's worth, the Ally X makes more sense.

Eventually, prices should stop changing. Steam Deck might be the better choice again when that happens. For now, the Xbox ROG Ally X has better performance for the money.
