There is good news about when the Steam Machine and Steam Frame will come out. At the same time, a recent performance issue with Resident Evil 4 Remake has been fixed, and people are still talking about Sony's plans for PC versions of PlayStation games.

Even with a shortage of RAM and other supplies, work on the Steam Frame and Steam Machine is moving forward. People predict the launch window to be before June 2026.

Good News for the Steam Machine Release Window

There is proof for this timing in the activity on the Steam backend. The wireless adapter driver for the Steam Frame has just been made available to the public backend. The driver isn't very useful on its own. Still, the fact that it's available to the public indicates that preparations are underway for a public release.

Since the end of last year, developers have been able to use non-public driver versions of the Steam Frame. Valve probably expects a consumer release soon because they moved those drivers to the public backend.

The language from the previous delay made it sound like the Steam Frame was the cause of the delay, not the Steam Machine itself. However, the two devices are still expected to come out at the same time, not at different times.

Why You Should Get a Standalone Steam Controller

Steam Controller is one device that could be released on its own. The controller will cost between $70 and $100 and will work with many other platforms.

Steam Controller would function with more than just the Steam Machine. It would also work with Windows PCs and SteamOS PCs. In some cases, even people who utilize the Steam Deck might find it useful. Some people put the Steam Deck on a stand or use a case with a kickstand while playing emulated or other games.

Releasing the controller early would also help take some of the burden off the first Steam Machine launch. If there aren't enough consoles to meet demand, selling the controller separately provides users a choice as they wait for the next round of purchases.

Like the Steam Deck, the first release of the Steam Machine is likely to happen in waves, albeit with smaller batches. Instead of a single big launch, preorders in waves could help control demand.

Software files show further signs of progress. Developers working with different SteamOS settings have already found system files containing setup icons and connection graphics for the new Steam Controller.

Fixed a Problem with Resident Evil 4 Remake's Performance

Capcom just fixed a problem in Resident Evil 4 Remake that was causing it to run slowly. The problem started when the DRM and anti-cheat mechanisms were switched from Denuvo to Enigma.

Enigma made many systems, even high-end PCs, run more slowly. The effect was even more pronounced on the Steam Deck, where performance was significantly reduced.

The adjustment upset people because it affected a single-player game released in 2023. Lowering performance years after the game's release sparked widespread anger.

Capcom took Enigma out of the game completely. There is no DRM on the game right now. Denuvo might come back later if license issues are resolved, but for now, the game works without either system.

Capcom has dealt with similar problems in the past. An update to Monster Hunter Rise in January 2025 enabled anti-cheat security, causing the game to crash on the Steam Deck. Players swiftly addressed the problem after they were told about it.

Steam Deck Performance Options and Restrictions

Using a slight change, Resident Evil 4 Remake plays fine on the Steam Deck using the default settings. You can set the texture quality to High 2GB and leave most other parameters at their default.

The game usually runs at about 30 fps under these conditions. But because of the game's scope and rendering technology, it is not possible to achieve a consistent 30 fps.

The game shows the scene twice when you aim with a rifle scope. This double rendering makes the performance dip to about 20 fps. Taking the scope off rifles solves this problem for most of the game.

In one part of the game, you need the thermal scope to find weak spots on regenerators. When shooting during that part, the frame rate dips to about 20–22 fps because the thermal effect adds another layer of rendering.

The game runs at a steady 30 fps outside of those times and keeps its visual quality.

Sony's New Plan for PC Ports

Over the past two years, Sony has brought several PlayStation 5 games to PC. But lately, the company's internal approach has changed.

Future PlayStation games may not come to PC very quickly unless they are second-party projects or live-service multiplayer games. Some people may have to wait a lot longer to get a port.

Financial reports help explain the reasons. Sony's PC sales account for roughly 1.5% of its gaming revenue. Helldivers 2 brings in a lot of the money.

Without that title, PC sales would drop below 1%. Early PC versions like God of War 2018 and Horizon Zero Dawn sold well, prompting additional ports.

Later releases didn't do as well, and several games didn't even sell 1 million copies on PC. This makes Sony less likely to invest heavily in PC releases on the first day.

Higher prices for older ports could change how many people want them. PC fans may not be as interested in a game that came out on PC years after it came out on console at almost full price.

Effect on PC Gamers

The effect may not be big for most players. Returnal, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, and Spider-Man 2 are just a few of the big PlayStation games that are already on PC.

It's still conceivable that future multiplayer or live-service games will come out on PC, since they do better with a lot of players.

A day-and-date PC strategy could boost sales, but it could also hurt console hardware sales. Some experts say that PCs' simultaneous release with Xboxes hurt Xbox's exclusivity.

Keeping consoles exclusive promotes hardware sales. Because of this, Sony may keep putting the PlayStation ecosystem first and only deliver some games to PC later.
