Your party has to take a short break from the grueling battles against the heavily armored Zeugles and the oppressive Renan lords for your survival. One of the most fun and mechanically engaging ways to unwind in Tales of Arise is by mastering the comprehensive fishing system.

This peaceful little minigame is completely optional, but recommended if you’re looking to maximize your culinary buffs and earn a huge amount of passive income. And the strict requirement for unlocking the prestigious Godly Angler trophy is to track down all forty-four unique species of aquatic life across the twin worlds.

You don’t get the fishing mechanic immediately when you start your journey. As you play through the main story campaign, you organically unlock the system and finally get to step into the lush green world of Elde Menancia. When the party reaches the Talka Pond Road area, a mandatory story event occurs where Kisara introduces the party to the joys of angling. You’ll also be handed Kisara’s default beginner rod as a formal gift from the eccentric NPC known as the Fishing Expert, and you can cast your line into any body of water with ripples and leaping fish.

Mastered the Reel and Tackle

Before you go on a rampage hunting down the legendary boss fish hidden across Dahna, it’s vital to understand the basic mechanics of the minigame. Cast your line and pay close attention to your reticle when you get to a designated fishing spot and aim at the bubbling water.

When you are hovering over a good spot, the cursor will immediately turn from the normal blue to a bright yellow, which means that there is a high concentration of aquatic life. Once the line is well under, you have to do a certain series of button presses to shake the lure in a way that perfectly imitates a struggling insect or wounded minnow.

Different fish species are wildly attracted to different styles of movement, which are clearly displayed on the left side of your screen before you even cast the line. When a fish finally bites, a frantic QTE follows. You wanna tilt your rod toward the big arrows on your screen while holding down the reel button.

Every now and then the fish will try to violently snap your line by jumping up in the air or quickly darting to the side, and you need to hit the appropriate shoulder buttons to counter its escape attempt right away. Stay cool and follow the on-screen prompts to the letter, and even the biggest boss fish will tire of the game eventually.

Acquire the Proper Equipment

Kisara’s starter rod is a terrible way to try and land large aquatic predators in the late-game, and is guaranteed to result in complete disaster and incredible frustration. Your line will break instantly and the fish will swim off into the murky depths. You need to actively upgrade your gear by reaching certain milestones to properly conquer the waters. Your main benefactor is the Fishing Expert who is permanently based at Talka Pond Road.

As you methodically catch new and unique species of fish and record them in your field guide, you can go back to him to claim powerful new rods including the Novice Tackle and Fish Sniper. Lastly, to obtain the absolute best rod in the game, the Alliance Marine Rod, you must head over to the Viscint Training Grounds and completely defeat Kisara's ultimate level-sixty solo combat challenge.

The one single most important factor determining which specific fish will bite your line, along with the rods, is your choice of lure. Each lure can attract up to 3 unique species, which really cuts down on the frustrating randomness of the minigame. Basic lures like the Trembling Lure and the Rock Slapper can be bought from the various innkeepers found inside major city hubs for a few Gald.

However, the highest-tier, most specialized lures are hidden in blue treasure chests scattered across the overworld, or awarded for completing late-game sub-quests. The key to finishing your aquatic compendium efficiently is to match the right lure to the right fish.

The Calaglian and Cyslodian Fisheries

Your big fishing trip unofficially kicks off in the scorching, desert wastelands of Calaglia. In all this land there is only one place to fish, and that is safely tucked away in the gloomy, dripping depths of the Cave of Solitude. This is a very early area with a pretty straightforward set of targets.

Throw your line in the underground pool and you will catch the Cave Sea Bass, the Amber Mackerel and the bright Coral Flatfish in no time. Here you will use the Charming Lure and the Flaptrap to catch the remaining Karasuba Sea Bream and Lacerda Salmon with minimal effort.

Heading north into the freezing blizzards of Cyslodia unlocks two brand new ice-choked fishing spots. The first is located in the southern section of the Nevira Snowplains where the freezing waters are inhabited by the Pond Tilapia and the aggressive Berserker Piranha. The Tricolored Catfish and the Polar Bass also hide near the icy bottom.

Your next target area is higher up the mountain trail, within the Frozen Valley. The resilient Hawksbill Trout and Pearly Pike are not deterred by biting winds here. In this particular valley, the Rock Slapper lure works very well to easily attract both the Azure Tilapia and the Cyslodian Salmon.

Ponds and Streams of Menance

Elde Menancia provides a much more temperate and visually exciting experience for the seasoned angler. The first large patch is safely tucked away on the southern edge of Overseer Hill, well out of the way of the roaming Zeugles. The Menancian Bass and the Traslida Arowana are here, swimming in the calm, clear water. A Bienfu Lure cast near the deeper rocks will easily pull out a Golden Catfish, while the standard beginner’s popper will net you the ubiquitous Dahnan Bass.

A brief walk away is the Talka Pond Road where the Fishing Expert permanently resides and where your first tutorial takes place. As your tackle collection grows you'll want to come back to this old pond often. The shallow waters are the habitat of the Menancian Catfish and the Talka Trout, both of which can be easily caught on normal tackle.

But this peaceful pond also houses a giant, heavily armored boss fish called the Aureum Arowana. To catch this golden titan you need a lot of patience, a very upgraded fishing rod and the Teepo Lure, which is only gifted to you after you have registered thirty-five unique species in your notes.

The Mahag Saar Ruins & Ocean Excursions

The war-torn, overgrown valleys of Mahag Saar are hiding some of the most aggressive aquatic predators in the entire game. Your first port of call should be the crumbling Adan Ruins, just north of the local campsite. Drop your line into the ancient, flooded masonry and you will attract the Muddy Pirarucu and the Emerald Salmon. You can also find the Lesser Pirarucu and the Aqfotle Arowana by equipping the appropriately acquired lures from the nearby city hubs.

A little further south lies Adan Lake, a huge lake that really puts your reeling strength to the test. The lake is also home to the Vesper Sea Bass and the Sardonyx Grouper. More importantly, this body of water is home to another huge boss fish, the much larger and more aggressive cousin of the Muddy Pirarucu.

To properly conquer this region you also need to go to the Hidden Wharf and talk directly with the captain of the local vessel, Mahavar. He's happy to take your party out on the deep open ocean.” This boat trip allows you to fish for saltwater species such as the Blueback Tuna, the Mahag Saar Barracuda, and the legendary Silver Marlin, a very fast boss fish that can only be caught with perfect execution of quick-time events.

The Secret Caverns and Ganath Haros Marsh

Ganath Haros adds the dense, humid swamps and massive cascading waterfalls to the standard terrestrial fishing holes. Stop by the gentle streams of Shinefall Woods to quickly snag the Ganath Haros Piranha and the Green Pike. You’ll also find the local Ganath Haros Catfish lounging around the muddy banks.

If you travel a little further south into the Lavtu Marshlands, you will find a much deeper, darker pool of water. For the Lavtu Tilapia and the Lavtu Arowana, you need the Stick Lure. Cobalt Trout requires a special lure, which you can only obtain by completing a sub-quest in Cysloden.

The real difficulty of the Ganath Haros region lies far from the main road. If you wish to fully explore the Fogwharl Limestone Caverns, you will need to accept and complete the Untamable Rage sub-quest. Deep in this beautiful glowing cave underground is a secret fishing spot where you can catch the Fogwharl Pike and the Tsuyukusa Mackerel.

It’s also the only place in the game where you’ll find the Cygni Pirarucu, a horrendously huge boss fish that will instantly cut through any low-tier fishing line. If you want any hope of getting this ancient beast to bite, you'll need to obtain the Zapie Doppelganger lure from a nearby treasure chest.

The Godly Angler and the Deserted Isle

The very last fishing location in the game is locked until you reach the final dungeon and activate a very particular post-game event. You have to go to the Tuah Seashore and find a mysterious message in a bottle that has washed ashore. This will start the sub-quest Beyond the Grave, which will eventually lead to Mahavar taking your party to a completely secret location known as the Uninhabited Island. After you have taken back the island from the dangerous inhabitants you can cast your line into the pristine, untouched waters of the island.

Hidden in here is the secret island where the last missing entries for your compendium are hidden including, the Mahag Saar Flatfish, the Gluttonous Barracuda and the Zesti Grouper It is also the home of the final, and most devastating, boss fish in the game. If you are going to drag this last titan onto the sandy beach, you have to make sure you have the very best rod on and your reflexes well-honed.

Once the beast is finally captured your water logbook will be fully complete. Then, once more, you return to the Fishing Expert at Talka Pond Road for a grand celebration of your efforts. He’ll gladly give up the legendary Tenebrae Mark Three rod and your steadfast dedication will be officially recognized by the game with the Godly Angler trophy, eternally etching your name as the greatest fisherman in Dahna’s history.
