AMD Ryzen 9950X3D2 Specs, Performance and Pricing Breakdown

Performance gains remain focused on professional workloads while gaming sees minimal uplift due to chiplet behavior.

AMD has finally introduced the 9950X3D2. This new CPU has different specs and performance requirements from the other processors in the series. This seems a lot like the standard 9950X3D, given the specs. It has 16 cores and 32 threads, with a base clock speed of 4.3 GHz.

The boost clock, on the other hand, is 100 MHz lower. The X3D2 has 3DV cache on both chiplets, giving it a total L3 cache of 192 MB.

Specifications and Main Differences

The TDP is also different; it has been raised to 200W. The extra L3 cache was the cause of this rise. These are the most important hardware-level differences between the two processors.

What to Expect from Gaming Performance

When it comes to performance, things aren't as apparent. In the announcement, AMD did not say anything about how well the games will run. From what we know, gaming workloads haven't improved much.

You might observe small improvements in a select few games, but overall performance looks the same. It also sounds like the second chiplet might still be turned off while you're playing. That's why AMD says that a Ryzen X3D processor still gives you the same level of gaming performance, which means that performance stays mostly the same.

Improvements to Professional Workloads

The X3D2 does help with professional workloads, though. We are seeing improvements of 5% to 13% over the normal 9950X3D.

You can see these improvements, but you should think about whether they are worth the upgrade. In many cases, workloads perform better with more cores or higher clock speeds than with cache alone.

Things to think about with Zen 6

This makes me very worried about the impending Zen 6 Ryzen 10000 series. More cores will likely improve performance for most workloads. Higher clock speeds will help some things more than others that don't scale with cores.

Zen 6 is projected to deliver both, based on what we know right now. You can expect more cores across the whole lineup, up to 24, as well as more cache. Along with faster clock rates, there is also a projected IPC gain of about 10%.

There might also be better 3DV cache implementations in future versions of X3D, coupled with a node transition. From this, it looks like the next generation will be a big improvement.

Pricing and When It Comes Out

On April 22, the processor will be available. This means it will be ready considerably sooner than Zen 6. But the price will affect the choice.

People are saying that the price is $799. At that point, it's hard to justify the extra cost over the ordinary 9950X3D unless you want the best overall performance. It can still be the greatest CPU for the money, but it doesn't offer much value compared to other options.

Final Thoughts

We need to think about how quickly we can get something against how much better it will be in the future. If you wait for Zen 6, you might get better long-term value, especially if the core count and clock speed increases are in line with what you expect.
