Handheld Gaming PC After Steam Update Full Performance Breakdown

High performance hardware meets inconsistent Windows 11 software in portable gaming setup.

When you buy your first handheld gaming PC, you might worry about how well it works, how well it's made, and whether it can really replace regular gaming systems.

After using it every day for three months, it's easy to see what works and what doesn't, as well as whether handheld technology has gotten to the point where it can compete with full-size computers.

What Windows 11 Did to Make a Difference

The major reason I chose this portable over others like the Steam Deck or Nintendo Switch was that it runs Windows 11. Windows lets you use all the major game launchers, including Xbox, Steam, Epic Games, and more. It also lets games with anti-cheat systems, such as Call of Duty, Battlefield 6, and Rainbow Six Siege, run without any problems.

At first, it wasn't clear if a gadget that looks like a gamepad with a 7-inch touchscreen could work well. After three months, it's evident that it can run demanding AAA games without dropping a single frame. The grip is pleasant, and the configuration of the buttons and joystick makes sense.

AAA Gaming Performance in the Real World

During this time, the most-played game was Warhammer: Space Marine 2. Even on big areas with a lot of explosions and monsters, frame rates stayed at 60fps during the whole game. In multiplayer mode, performance got even better because there were fewer monsters and smaller terrain. Frame rates ranged from 90 to 120 fps.

There was no clear downside to playing on a handheld PC instead of full-size gaming equipment. It was easier to focus on goals when you were playing from a bed or a couch rather than a desk. Even though I hadn't played video games in years and had never used an Xbox controller before, I still did well in competitions.

The built-in gyroscope became quite important. Instead of only using joysticks, it lets you aim and move the camera by moving the gadget itself. This makes the way you control things feel more natural and responsive.

Playing Old Games Again on a Portable Device

Reinstalling older games like Fallout 4 and Borderlands 2 showed how portable hardware has changed over time. Borderlands 2 always ran at more than 120 fps, especially during boss encounters that were very graphically demanding. The fact that these games can be played at high performance on a handheld device shows how far hardware has come.

The device behaves like a console when connected to a TV. It acts like a regular PC when you attach it to a monitor, keyboard, and mouse. This versatility works for both leisure and competitive gaming setups.

Freedom comes from being able to move around and still perform well. You don't have to be stuck at a desk or in a dark room to play games anymore. It can keep going as you relax or travel without losing quality.

Storage and Hardware Specifications

The hardware inside is what makes it stand out. The fast SSD significantly reduces loading times, and it often shows alerts that other players are still loading. The system has 1TB of storage, which is good because some new games need up to 400GB to install.

The device has 24GB of RAM, which means it can handle current and future gaming needs without requiring hardware upgrades. These specs help keep multitasking and gaming performance steady.

Compared to other portable gadgets, the speakers throw out a lot of sound. It can also play music and podcasts because the screen is bigger and the speakers are louder.

IPS Display vs. OLED

The 7-inch IPS touchscreen runs at 120 Hz and delivers clear images, vibrant colors, and accurate color reproduction. Some people prefer OLED, though IPS doesn't have OLED's problems, like burn-in from static images and lower peak brightness. Higher peak brightness can be more useful for a gadget commonly used outdoors or in bright places.

The only thing that could make the display better is thinner bezels, since the current frame could accommodate a larger panel.

Concerns About the Quality of the Build

Some users have said that their speakers make noise, their SD card readers get too hot, their gyroscopes don't work, and their buttons or joysticks break. None of these problems happened in the last three months; the chassis material feels flexible. The back cover flexes a bit under strain, and the grip area makes a loud squeak when you use it.

The design features beautiful engravings, LED rings, and textured grip surfaces. Still, its structural integrity doesn't match the performance of the internal hardware.

Packaging and Extras

There is no travel case in the packing; however, there is a charger and a cardboard desk stand. The lack of a carry case makes it harder to carry a portable device. The official carry case is either out of stock or costs a lot of money to buy separately.

The charger that comes with it has a USB-C connector that can't be removed and requires its own power cord, making it less portable. A system with a detachable cable would be more flexible and easier to pack.

The cardboard desk stand is great for setting up on a desk, but it's not strong enough for on-the-go use. A stand made of rubber or silicone would make it easier to use over time.

Problems with Windows 11 and Software

Windows 11 and related services cause the most trouble. Frequent software upgrades can make it less stable. Updates have sometimes disabled USB ports, making it impossible to charge the device and causing update loops that depleted the battery.

Another problem that keeps cropping up is that the device tries to fix itself after updates but gets stuck in a boot loop. Also, sleep mode doesn't always work, so you have to press the power button for 15 seconds to force a reset.

There are also problems with the Xbox game launcher. Sometimes, you have to restart your device completely to fix an error message. Also, some games, like Call of Duty, might not download at all. Third-party launchers like Steam and Epic Games, on the other hand, don't have these kinds of problems.

Final Thoughts

The best thing about the hardware after three months of use is how well it works. It can handle modern gaming on the go thanks to its high frame rates, large storage, 24GB of RAM, and 120Hz IPS display.

But the whole experience is less enjoyable due to issues with build quality and Windows 11. When the system works well, it shows how mobile gaming PCs can get close to the power of full-size desktops. The hardware works well all the time, but the software remains the biggest problem that keeps things from running smoothly.
