Microsoft announced Crackdown 2 earlier this year, which was originally slated for a Q2 2010 release. This week, they announced that the sequel to the third-person shooter/platformer hybrid will have a slight delay; it will launch in North America on July 6. It will be released in the UK and European regions July 9th, and Asia, Australia, and New Zealand on July 8th.

As stated before, Scottish studio Ruffian Games will be in charge of making sure Crackdown 2 is in tip-top shape, mainly focusing on the online co-op multiplayer aspect of the game. Ruffian Games also said they expect competitive multiplayer to support up to 16 players online.

Crackdown 2 takes players back to Pacific City, where it picks up where the first game left off. A virus has been set loose in the city; infecting and creating a new breed of mutated creatures (Ruffian Games dubbed them the Freaks) in the process. The people who weren’t affected by the virus formed a rebel faction known as The Cell, opposing the Agency and the mutants. Players will take on the role of an Agent, taking on sabotage missions and infiltrating underground mutant tunnel hideouts.
