Joan is a boss that is more melee-focused. Her offensive patterns are sharp and quick but her telegraphs give clear openings to attacks her. As her health bar depletes, the fight naturally becomes more difficult, and the key to winning this boss fight in Castlevania: Belmont's Curse is timing and pacing your attacks.

Handling Joan's Attacks and Openings
During the first phase of the fight, Joan concentrates on direct sword blows. Her attacks come out briskly, but her recovery frames leave enough space to retaliate if you stay within mid-range.
Her most notable moves are broad horizontal slash attacks. While you can backstep or roll away to avoid them, you can often just crouch directly under the high swing trajectory.
Ducking keeps you very close to her, letting you counter immediately with low attacks the moment her blade passes over your head.
If you are playing aggressively, you will get killed quickly in this boss fight. Limit yourself to one or two solid strikes per opening rather than committing to long chains of attacks. Reset your neutral stance immediately after hitting her to get prepared for her next chains of attacks in Castlevania: Belmont's Curse
Managing Late-Fight Speed Buff
As Joan's health bar drops, she becomes more aggressive. Her attack recovery is shortened, and her sword swings chain together noticeably faster than the first half of the duel.
She attacks you very quickly, reducing the safe window to counterattack. When she starts rapid flurry attacks, back off a little and focus on evasion until she throws out a heavy slash you can cleanly duck under or dodge around.

FAQ
Q. Can you duck under Joan's slash attacks?
A. Yes. Several of her broad horizontal slashes travel high enough that crouching cleanly avoids the hit, allowing you to stay in melee range and attack her from a low stance.
Q. How does Joan change as her health gets low?
A. Joan hits harder and attacks noticeably faster in the latter portion of the duel. Lower your counterattack combos and focus more on clean defensive reactions.
