GTA Online to Receive Major Upgrades a Year After GTA 6 Launches

Grand Theft Auto 6 is still months from release, but it is already influencing how other publishers plan their launches. Twitch CEO Dan Clancy says some publishers are actively trying not to compete with Rockstar’s highly anticipated open-world game. In an interview with Bloomberg, Clancy talked about the huge attention expected for GTA 6.

He explained that some publishers plan to release their games earlier, especially in October, while others are waiting until after Rockstar’s launch window. GTA 6 is set to launch on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar is still focusing its marketing on the single-player experience and has not yet shared details about future multiplayer plans.

Publishers are steering clear of GTA 6. Clancy’s comments show how much attention publishers expect GTA 6 to get at launch. According to the Twitch CEO, some companies want to release their games before Rockstar’s launch, while others prefer to wait until after the initial GTA 6 launch period. This strategy makes sense when looking at the release calendar.

Any big game launching at the same time as GTA 6 would have to compete for players’ attention, media coverage, livestream viewers, and online buzz against one of the industry’s biggest releases. But Clancy thinks just waiting until after launch might not be enough. GTA 6’s multiplayer could bring even more hype.

Clancy suggested that the buzz around GTA 6 won’t fade after the single-player game comes out. He expects another big wave of attention when Rockstar eventually launches the game’s multiplayer mode. “We spent a lot of time talking with Rockstar about their plans,” Clancy said. He added that Twitch has been helping Rockstar think about how to involve creators with GTA 6.

Clancy said there will be a big boost when GTA 6 launches, and an even bigger one “next year when they launch multiplayer.” Since the interview happened in September 2026, Clancy’s mention of “next year” likely means 2027. Several reports have taken his comments to suggest that GTA 6’s multiplayer could launch sometime in 2027. Rockstar has not officially announced a release date for GTA 6’s multiplayer.

Twitch is already talking with Rockstar. The most interesting thing Clancy mentioned is that Twitch has been talking directly with Rockstar. Time is talking about Rockstar’s plans and how Twitch creators could be involved. That suggests creator engagement is already being considered ahead of GTA 6’s launch.

This relationship could become even more important when GTA 6 comes out. Grand Theft Auto games have long inspired livestreams and creator content, with GTA Online and role-playing communities playing a big role in streaming. If Rockstar releases a new multiplayer mode for GTA 6, Twitch could once again become a top platform for creators to build communities around the game.

Rockstar hasn’t shared multiplayer details yet. Even with Clancy’s comments, Rockstar is still keeping quiet about the next multiplayer experience. The studio hasn’t announced an official name, release date, pricing, or features for GTA 6’s multiplayer.
