Let's Analyze: Sonic 2017

Many assumed that Sonic Mania was the project that SEGA teased to celebrate the Blue Blur's 25th anniversary, and SEGA quickly dashed those assumptions to the side with the reveal of Sonic 2017. A new game that will bring back the team of modern and retro Sonic to once again save the world, but from what? The latest trailer doesn't give us much information but it's enough to create some decent a couple of decent hypotheses. After watching so many episodes of Game Theory it's hard not to analyze everything, thanks MatPat!

New Antagonist

The trailer opens up with giant robots terrorizing a city with fire scattered around. The first assumption would be that Dr. Robotnik, no I'm not calling him Eggman, is responsible for this and those are this robots however one detail is missing; his symbol. For anyone who has played a Sonic video game, watch one of the Blue Blurs television shows, or read one of the many Sonic comic books know that Dr. Robotnik has a massive ego. So much that he puts his logo everywhere to ensure that everyone knows who's responsible for the mayhem. Here the robots have no symbols which means this is an entirely new enemy.

Sonic's Angry?

I've played a lot of Sonic games and while I haven't played them all, the infamous Sonic the Hedgehog being one of them, I've never seen Sonic angry. What makes this shocking is that it's the opening scene after his clenching his fist and we see his full face for the first time.

Usually these trailers start off with upbeat music followed the Sonic performing some insane stunts, all with a clever smirk on his face. Now Sonic games are not known for having deep stories but perhaps SEGA is trying something else knew with this game.

Dr. Robotnik and Sonic Join Forces

It does end with the phase "Join the Resistance" which means Sonic is looking for more potential allies to fight this threat. Perhaps Sonic's nemesis, Dr. Robotnik, may join Sonic's cause against this new threat. This isn't new as the two have joined forces in the past for example Sonic Adventure 2. We could also see the possbility of playing as other characters, I would love to once again take control of Shadow.
