Mass Effect 3 Revealed at VGAs, out "Holiday 2011"

News by Matt Buckley on  Dec 13, 2010

EA had dropped numerous hints before Spike TV's Video Game Awards about what game they would be revealing during the show this past Saturday. It didn't come as much of a surprise to most that Mass Effect 3 was that game, but it didn't keep the goosebumps from surfacing.

Those of us watching were treated to a trailer depicting an English soldier sniping from Westminster Palace, while the landscape around him appeared devastated. The camera pans back, revealing the descent of several of the terror-inducing Reapers on to Earth while Commander Shepard plotted and schemed from his spaceship orbiting the planet. At the end of the trailer, we finally received the first indication of when we should expect to be playing Mass Effect 3 with a release time of "Holiday 2011."

Reapers in London... Looks a little different than Eden Prime, doesn't it?

Game director Casey Hudson has confirmed that Mass Effect 3 will complete the trilogy of games surrounding the Commander Shepard storyline. And just as Mass Effect 2's universe was affected by the player's outcome of the first Mass Effect title, Hudson has stated that decisions made in the first two games will also have a tangible effect on Mass Effect 3.

It doesn't look like any of the platforms will have to wait for the other this time around, as EA announced today that the PC, Xbox 360, and Playstation 3 versions will all be released simultaneously. Previously, Mass Effect 2 had only been released on the PC and Xbox 360, with the Playstation 3 version set to release on January 18th, 2011.

So, start speculating! How much of a gameplay difference do you expect to see in the new one? What characters from the first two games are you looking forward to seeing again the most? What's #1 on your wishlist for Mass Effect 3?

While you are pondering these questions, feast your eyes on the trailer that aired during the VGAs:
