You won't believe who's standing watch over the whole thing. Totoki Hiroki. This storyline resurfaces every few months. The hardware division is Sony's new focus. The emphasis has shifted away from PlayStation. Their focus is shifting to software development. This isn't some huge strategic shift, and every time it sounds good for about five seconds until you pay attention.
A satisfying ruse, it turns genuine business choices into something dramatic that isn't necessarily the case. Now we can dissect it. A large portion of Sony's television division is being sold. They're reorganizing their electronics division. Sony Pictures and Crunchyroll, among other anime sites, are receiving more funding.

All of a sudden, the storyline shifts to Sony pulling out of the hardware market.
Yes, they are cutting costs in low-margin areas. We can tell you what it is. What a savage. Margin calls, intense rivalry, and ongoing pricing pressure. Sony's actual profit is now coming from somewhere else. Thus, it was chopped down. They put that money into things that grow, and then they take it out. People conveniently omit this portion now.
Despite this, PlayStation continues to be Sony's most lucrative business unit. Including televisions, mobile phones, cameras, and PlayStation. So, why would Sony abandon the business unit that is bringing in the most money? There is no logic behind it. In fact, they're acting in the exact reverse. In order to increase their investment in what works, they are removing less effective segments.
What is effective at the moment? gaming system. It encompasses hardware as well. It encompasses exclusives as well. The whole ecosystem is a part of it. Because this is the truth that no one wants to admit. The PlayStation brand extends beyond software. Its setup is like a closed loop. Exclusives are the reason the hardware sells.
It is the install base that drives sales of the exclusives.
Because humans are unable to leave the ecosystem, it is expanding. The entire thing will weaken if you break that loop. People are confusing the replacement of PlayStation with expansion, movies, animation, cross-media, and intellectual property when they claim Sony is moving toward software. That is adding fuel to the fire.

The platform, the console, and the exclusives remain key, even as IP recognition, audience reach, and brand power increase. For the simple reason that it wouldn't only affect Sony if they genuinely lost sight of that. The whole business model would collapse. Hardware becomes less appealing when there are no strong exclusives.
A smaller install base is the result of using less hardware. Software sales will be lower with a smaller install base. And out of nowhere, you're not growing any further. You're getting smaller. That is why it is so deceiving to say that Sony is leaving. Hardware will not be abandoned.
Their goal is to safeguard it. It's being strengthened. As everything else develops around it, they are ensuring the foundation remains solid. Is Sony's plan being misunderstood, or are people simply ignoring details that don't work with the story?
