Sony Reveals Online Pass, Confirmed for Resistance 3

This new online pass thing is starting to become big business for gaming companies. Electronic Arts used this as a way to combat the issue of retailers like Gamestop selling used copies, with other third party publishers like THQ doing the same with Homefront, and Warner Bros. with Mortal Kombat. Now, Sony is joining the bandwagon.

Today, Sony confirmed that they will use their own variation of the online pass. This came from a rumor that was leaked over the weekend, and that it would be named “PSN Pass.” However, Sony did not confirm that that was its official name. Sony’s new online pass program will begin with Insomniac’s upcoming Resistance 3.

Resistance 3 will spearhead Sony's new online pass program.

“This program will be game-specific,” a Sony rep has confirmed.  “Games that are a part of this program will include a single-use registration code that grants the account holder redeeming the code full online access for that title. The company giant sees this as their “commitment to enhancing premium online services across our first party game portfolio."

Sony didn’t clarify if other games like Uncharted 3 will have an online pass integrated into it, but their statement is proof that it’s possible. Eventually, we may see most (if not all) Sony-exclusive titles with online capabilities with a pass requirement. It also makes me wonder if Microsoft and/or Nintendo will follow suit. Sony didn’t divulge on a price point for it either, but I could take a guess at around $10. We should expect more details in the coming months though, so stay tuned.
