Switch 2 Smashes Records While Metroid Prime 4 Stays in the Shadows

Nintendo’s latest numbers reveal a historic launch for the Switch 2, but with Metroid Prime 4 absent from the spotlight, fans are left wondering if success and anticipation can truly coexist.

The most recent financial information from Nintendo was like a big step forward for a whole generation. Under predictions and charts were pages and pages of a story about momentum, which is something that not many companies ever hear.

Even though the Switch 2 is still new, it is already changing people's minds. What seemed uncertain during the Christmas season has now become something historic. The Switch 2 has sold 17.37 million units around the world in just six to seven months.

That number puts it ahead of every other new game launch ever. It took a full year for both the PlayStation 4 and the PlayStation 5 to get close to the same numbers. Early doubts have quietly been put to rest by a showing that is almost unheard of.

Strong openings, on the other hand, don't define whole generations.

The harder test is keeping up demand. Nintendo knows this better than most people. As economic pressure mounts on the tech industry as a whole, hardware progress needs to be fueled by software cadence, cultural relevance, and price discipline.

As the AI arms race speeds up and component costs rise, people across the industry are talking about how to change prices. Even though Nintendo hasn't confirmed an increase, just the thought of it changes how people see it.

Long-term adoption could be affected by even small changes, especially as the Switch 2 moves from early adopters to the mainstream. The past is still selling even though the future is moving faster. The first Switch sold an extra 1.38 million units last quarter, bringing its total sales to 155.37 million all-time.

By that measure, it is now officially Nintendo's best-selling console of all time.

The only console still ahead in the world rankings is the PlayStation 2. This important step brings up a quiet question. The Switch hasn't had a formal price cut in almost ten years since it first came out. Since its replacement is doing well, a reduction could allow one last surge.

Nintendo hasn't said anything about making such a move, but it's getting harder and harder to pass up the chance. The performance of software tells a more complicated story. With the help of aggressive bundling, Mario Kart World sold over 14 million copies.

Kirby Air Riders got to 1.7 million downloads, while Donkey Kong Bananza went over 4 million. These good results support Nintendo's strategy that will always work. But there was one absence that stood out.

There was no record of Metroid Prime 4 being one of the million-plus buyers.

It's harder to report when the game takes up space on both Switch and Switch 2. There is some worry that the total sales may already be higher than the threshold, but confirmation has not yet come. This unpredictability is important because Metroid Prime 4 costs a lot of money.

It took longer to create, which was risky for both money and creativity. For the most part, Metroid has never been a big hit. It stays alive not because of sheer volume but because of respect, loyalty, and identity.

Nintendo is now at a well-known fork in the road. Early signs point to hardware control, steady sales of legacy products, and some software wins. In the background, though, are price pressure and how well the business is doing.

The numbers show that things are looking good, but the next part will be written by decisions that haven't been made yet.
