The combat and upgrade systems in Abyssus are based on certain aspects of the game. They enable attack and ability customization, influencing each run's overall playstyle.

Fundamentally, Aspects are linked to Blessings' special effects, which come into play when a specific weapon or skill is employed. When combined, they produce a system that incentivizes strategy and experimentation.

Selecting an Aspect Category and then picking a Blessing from that category are the two primary choices that must be made while arriving at an altar. One of three attack slots, Primary Fire, Secondary Fire, or Ability, is occupied by each Blessing.

Ability refers to specialized tools or sub-weapons, Secondary Fire provides an alternative firing method, and Primary Fire symbolizes the primary weapon attack. Which Blessing effect activates during fighting depends on the combination selected.

For some aspects, specific attack slots are more appropriate. For example, Defensive Aspects work best in Primary or Secondary Fire slots because numerous strikes allow for constant shield regeneration. On the other hand, offensive Aspects like Night or Fire that focus on elemental or area damage thrive in Ability slots.

Progressing with Aspects also leads to stronger rewards. Every third and sixth Blessing chosen from the same Aspect category grants a Minor and later a Major Blessing. These are powerful upgrades that enhance core stats, unlock unique effects, and often synergize with the charms collected throughout the game.

Aspect of the Night (Best for Ability)

Creating Shadows that increase damage is the main goal of the Night Aspect. It is excellent for long-term offensive tactics because it also lengthens the duration of status effects. Both Rupturing Shadows and Weakening Shadows are suggested blessings; they both inflict constant, gradually decreasing damage.

Blood Aspect (Best for Ability)

Power and health are linked by the Blood Aspect. It inflicts Hemorrhage, which causes enemies to sustain ongoing damage that increases with maximum health, and deals more damage based on remaining health. Blood Offering and Blood Ability are examples of useful blessings that help maintain a risk-reward equilibrium between harm and survival.

Defense Aspect (Best for Primary or Secondary Fire)

Defense Aspects provide barrier generation and increase maximum health, turning the character into a tank-like build. Useful Blessings, such as Rapid Barrier and Retaliating Barrier, enhance protection and can reflect damage back to enemies.

Fire Aspect (Best for Primary or Secondary Fire)

The Fire Aspect emphasizes burning damage over time. Flames can stack to intensify damage output against stronger enemies. The best Blessings to use are Linked Flames and Stacking Flames, which build continuous fire effects and chain burn damage across multiple targets.

Fortune Aspect (Best for Ability)

Fortune blends resource gain with offense. It scales attack power based on the amount of gold held and increases gold collection during expeditions. Distracting Glare and Exponential Gold are examples of effective blessings that promote resource management and counteract efficiency.

Aspect of Frost (Optimal for Primary Fire)

Frost's specialty is freezing adversaries, slowing their attacks and movements. When combined with Night Aspects, which prolong status duration, it performs exceptionally well. Because they enable improved location during combat, Quick Freeze and Heavy Freeze are powerful blessings for crowd control and boss engagements.

Lightning Aspect (Best for Primary or Secondary Fire)

Lightning delivers area-of-effect (AoE) damage and chain attacks. It's excellent for quickly clearing groups of enemies. Blessings like Static Repetition and Charging Bounce send out electric surges that link targets together, ensuring multiple enemies are hit simultaneously.

Ocean Aspect (Best for Ability)

The Ocean Aspect summons tentacles that attack enemies and strengthen when allies are present. It provides a balance between offense and support. It's especially effective in cooperative modes, helping allies while maintaining consistent area control.

Spirit Aspect (Any Slot)

By calling out spectral beings, Spirit Aspects directly target adversaries. High burst damage is dealt by these spirits, which makes them perfect for aggressive playstyles. Both the quantity and power of summoned spirits are increased by the Strong Blessings of Aggression, Possession, and Plentiful Spirits.

Wind Aspect (Best for Ability)

Wind focuses on generating windbursts that deal AoE damage. These attacks are useful for pushing back enemies and maintaining space during combat. Whirling Winds and Headwind are top choices, providing both damage and defensive spacing advantages.

Synergy and Progress Tracking

Strong synergy can be produced by combining aspects. For example, combining Blood and Defense strikes a balance between risk-taking and survival, while partnering Frost and Night gradually improves control and damage. Every combination enables experimentation to accommodate various adversary types or runs.

All Aspects and Blessings used are documented in the Expedition Logbook located in the lobby for improved tracking. It helps go over earlier configurations and hone tactics. It is possible to determine which Aspect combinations work best in particular situations by looking back at previous excursions.
